Happy for @B1GTide, dominant win.

But this is also my problem with the playoff set up. Let me be clear. I am not blaming Ohio State and I thought they were better than Oregon in the first game, but the number one overall seed who was undefeated and did beat both Ohio State and Penn State had to head wound up with no advantage whatsoever, and in fact a serious disadvantage.

Winning the first game meant that Oregon had to play a tough opponent, Penn State, in the conference championship game. So it’s not like they really got a bye week. As consolation for losing to both teams, Penn State got handed the two biggest cupcakes in the tournament to make the semi finals. Oregon would’ve gotten an easier route if they would’ve done what Penn State did and lost!

Yes, Ohio State did have a fair to middling opponent in their later game, but unlike Oregon, who had to fly halfway across the country to play a neutral site contest, Ohio State had a home game with fans, frustrated over their most recent performance who made them an even better team than they already are.

The regular season game between Ohio State and Oregon was one of the most exciting games of the season, and does anyone here really think Oregon will remember this or hold onto this like it was something fantastic? 12 years ago, this would be one of those games we would be talking about as a key game during the season, but instead the net result was a punishment for the team that won and a second chance for the team that lost.

This is my larger point regarding the college football that I feel I have lost and this part has nothing to do with NIL or the portal.

I also pointed out, and people can go through my posts to see this, that teams like Ohio State and Alabama and a few others are going to win more national championships when they managed to sneak into playoffs with low seeds. We are on track for that to happen.

Again, nobody should take it as a slam against Ohio State, who played magnificently, but there was a time that what Oregon did in the regular season would have been enough. As it is, they went from one of their most memorable seasons, ever to wishing they had never heard of the 12-team playoff.

I mean, isn't this about the same as Bama/LSU in 2011?
up to a point it is, although that was sent into motion by several other teams also losing within the next 10 days or so.

That being said, some of us were making that point at the time and it just felt kind of weird. A similar thing happened in 2017.

Alabama got one extra week off while LSU had a game, and I would not argue that particular point. But that was when only two teams could make it and it didn’t set up a situation where multiple teams that LSU and Alabama had beaten somehow got an easier path to the national title game.

I would also argue that was largely offset by virtue of the fact that the rematch was basically in LSU home territory.

Ironically, the playoffs were basically instituted as a result of outrage over the "do-over" game that Bama got in 2011.

I said it back then that all playoffs (and especially expanded playoffs) would do in CFB is allow even more do-overs. And that is exactly what we've seen play out so far...

They need to go because they put the losers at a disadvantage and they force both participants to play an extra game while other teams rest. They have no place in a playoff system like this.
I also think a reseeding element should be in place like there is in the NFL. Granted it worked out for this year but I guarantee you that at some point a 11 seed is going to upset a 6 seed and gift a #4 seed a NC invitation.

I know that idea is out there, but that isn’t “ really” true although it sort of looks like it. Congress was saber rattling and wanting to stick their nose into it and so the powers that B came up with the short playoff that I actually thought was probably the best of all worlds except for the fact I was fine with using the standard BCS top four.

In this, the conferences did better than the NCAA did with NIL and the portal.
