Kines said the defense was still in a transition phase and needs work. He used unique metaphors to describe where his unit is.

"We have two bricks and some mortar, and everyone wants to know what color the roof is," he said. "We need to take care of the basics and specific things before we focus on the big picture. The defense right now is like my wife's cooking. It's just a fact. You can't change it whether you like it or not."

Most fans want to give Brodie Croyle credit for our 10-2 season in '05. Not me..In fact, outside of the Florida game, he had basically nothing to do with it.

I was not a very big fan of Joe Kines during the '03 season and afterward, mainly because I didn't (and still don't) believe in the 'bend but don't break' philosophy and hence was hugely disappointed that Mike Price hired him away from Florida St., and because of the '4th and 19' giveaway against Tennessee. BUT....he earned my respect during the '05 season--JK's defense single -handedly carried us to a 10-2 season AND a win against Texas Tech in the Cotton Bowl. For that I love him to death and hope he and the wife will retire to Alabama as soon as he's done in College Station.
