I don't get to post these type of stories so sorry if it has been listed here already, I didn't see a discussion for it.

Would I had like to of been a fly on the wall here. I can't even imagine what the conversations are like between the likes of these two.

President Trump reportedly considering executive order limiting NIL after meeting with Nick Saban

Saban reportedly complained about NIL to Trump, who was in Tuscaloosa to deliver the University of Alabama's commencement address, and said he believed the system has damaged college sports. However, the coach didn't propose eliminating NIL but instead "reforming" it to address an allegedly uneven playing field.
Trump reportedly said he agreed with Saban and would look at drafting an executive order, directing aides to begin studying what such an order would say.

I agree that the current situation is unsustainable and have put forward a solution so many times that I won't repeat it here.

It does seem to me that the portal is a bigger problem than pay-for-play. But the two together are a nightmare that I truly believe will end up doing more harm than good for the very players so many thought they would help

I'm not at all sure any President has the authority to unilaterally impose a cap on pay-for-play. And if one were signed, it would be challenged about a nanosecond later.

Whatever the solution ends up being, it has to be uniformly enforceable across all 50 states and has to have enforcement provisions including the power of federal oversight, federal subpoena power, and deposition under oath -- i.e. threat of perjury. Otherwise, you'll just have cheating on a scale that makes the old NCAA stuff look quaint -- looking at you, UTw, aTm, Oregon, and UTe.

There’s no doubt a better way to reign all this in, regardless of who’s in the White House. IMHO, more federal government intrusion in our lives is not what’s needed.

I would prefer an exec order to appt CNS to head up a small task force to solve the problem by the championship game in 2026. Exclude anyone who has had an NCAA position, exclude pointy headed academics, exclude politicians. task force would include only the P4 commissioners and a G5 appointee. You have 6 months to come up with a solution.

Tell the G5 folks to ride or die. D1 should really only be P4 going forward IMHO, but if we have to keep them around to beat up on, they're going to only get a minute voice in what CFB becomes.

Recommendations would then become bills in congress to vote on in Jan 2026. All changes would become effective July 1, 2026.

Or something like this.

100%, while also thinking I’d 100% rather have an angry three legged hippopotamus make the decisions than I would any politician.
I agree on the aversion to politicians having a say. But it's unavoidable.

We all agree that the current issues on the transfer portal and pay-for-play are chaotic and unsustainable. But for the solution to be legally and uniformly enforceable across all states, you to have to have Congressional action of some description.

Could be in the form of a prescribed structure -- which is scary for all the reasons you've already cited. Or could be in the form of an exemption from anti-trust laws. Thereby paving the way for a union / management structure and negotiation of a CBA.

I wish we could turn the clock back to the pre-O'Bannon days. But they're as dead and gone as a T-Rex. Reluctantly recognizing that, I'll take Door #2, Monte.

I'm excited that our old coach is helping patch up college football or really all college athletics. He's got a bigger job than the Head coach of Alabama now, imo he's the right one tasked with fixing the mess. He's got great insight, and he tapped a pretty cool resource with the White House. I can imagine the VP whose an Ohio State fan probably getting in the way of making real progress. The whole Portal/NIL in college ball is an entire drama at this point. Documentary worthy even.

An executive order wont do anything. Too many states rights, collective bargaining and antitrust issues at stake

Will take new federal laws. There's really not nearly enough consensus in congress to get it at the moment

I realize we're at the intersection of football and the law. So we're necessarily walking on the edge here. But keep politics off the football board.

If you have to use the words, "this administration" or "Trump" or another name or wording clearly referring to Donald Trump, to express your idea, there's a good chance it needs to go to Non-Sports.

Instead of revoking Harvard's tax exemption, Trump ought to revoke the NCAA's tax exemption. They would fold like a deflated bouncey castle. Plus it would hasten something new more structured being developed.
