Coaching Carousel 2021

  • Hi Guest, we are working on updating the site servers and software. We're also 'forcing' everyone to read and agree to our site privacy policy and terms of service. There are no significant changes to either of these but the terms page does clarify a few things that are mostly in the legalese. You can just click the checkbox for both and continue using the site as usual! We'll update you more on the site upgrades VERY soon! THANK YOU AS ALWAYS for supporting the site and being an active participant!

Just saw that. I wonder how OU feels today after Lanning's defense was shredded by Bryce Young and the Tide's offense. To my knowledge he has no HC experience and you would think a program like Oklahoma could have found someone more qualified.
Muskogee, Oklahoma once elected a 19-year old kid mayor of their town.

This is right up there with that. OU is also doing what you really shouldn't do by hiring a name coordinator with zero HC experience to drive the Schooner. It's worked for them but it also has misfired more than once.

Venables seems a more likely candidate for OU

This could spell the end of what Davi had at Clemson. Frankly, once teams realized he was stealing signals and proceeded to create confusion, his defense wasn’t as elite.

Why do some of our fans keep saying this? For the love of God please stop.
When Coach Saban does retire, I think you will see many names tossed about like Dabo, Kiffin, Jimbo, Kirby, and a host of others(I am not making any recommendations here). There will be several dark horse names thrown out there too. Some of these coaches will seriously want the job, and some will use the threat of moving to Tuscaloosa to get a huge contract from their current employer.

I can appreciate how good a defensive coordinator he is but as a head coach I’m not so sure. OU is rolling the dice on this one. It would be great to get rid of him at Clemson but I think OU will regret this hire if it comes to pass.
My impression is that Oklahoma has gotten the worst of this deal particularly from a recruiting standpoint. Whether it is true or not, Riley had a reputation as an offensive guru with two consecutive Heisman QBs. He takes that now to USC and Oklahoma is left to reestablish their credibility with known offensive minds at Texas and Texas A&M who will compete for every five star talent in the region.

To each their own.

We'd nitpick to death any potential candidate, complain about their personality, their recruiting, their methods.

If I searched the forum I strongly suspect there isn't a single power five HC currently out there that the board would collectively sign off on.

If you want to keep the dynasty rolling Dabo is the obvious slam dunk candidate.

If you want to roll the dice with someone unproven, more power to you.
This board can be extremely critical of every coach out there other than CNS, even those who have beaten or competed well against Bama.

OU fans used to view Brent Venables the way we now look at Pete Golding--if this is who they end up with, then that tells me they struck out on better candidates.
I'm glad I'm not the only one who rememebers "Fire Brent Venables!" and then watching him salvage a reputation as some sort of defensive guru at Clemson. Here's a reminder of how good Venables actually is:

POST-SEASON DEFENSIVE POINTS SURRENDERED
2015 Oklahoma - 17
2015 Alabama - 38 (the Drake TD isn't Venables' doing)
2016 Ohio State - 0
2016 Alabama - 31
2017 Alabama - 17 (Mack Wilson Pick Six not his fault)
2018 Notre Dame - 3
2018 Alabama - 16
2019 Ohio St - 23 (and gave up 516 yards)
2019 LSU - 41 (and gave up 628 yards)
2020 Ohio St - 49 (and gave up 649 yards)

I mean, how difficult is it to give up over 500 yards in your last three big games during which you went 1-2, and you largely won the one you did because of some poor officiating?

Everyone focuses on that one shutout and blocks out the fact he isn't all that great against decent teams.
