How do you feel about the OT rules ? I think they are good for nothing but padding stats.

" Billy Bob threw 8 TD passes as Joe's School for Wheel Chair Repair Technology outlasted the Auburn School for Cow Manure studies 84 - 76 in 8 Overtime periods "

I would much rather have one extra 15 minute period, when one team scores they kick off and the other team gets one chance. They dont score, game over. If neither team scores , the game ends in a tie.

Its a slow day at work today so figured...what the heck...

I like the rules, I would just like them move the starting position back some. I think that they start at the 30? I would move them back to the 40 or 50. That way the winning team has to make a drive to win.

with the way it is now, i agee with move them back a bit (out of fieldgoal range). if the first possession team chokes... the other team shouldn't be kicking a fg one first down. on the other hand; i think it would be neat to incorporate all the aspects of the game into overtime (like special teams).

At first I preferred the college and high school version, but somehow it turns out to be a setting up to win with a FG game. I think I would prefer the NFL version but not with sudden death. 15 minute overtime with a kickoff and full field. Team A scores a TD on its first possession, Team B then has to score a TD on its first possession or it's over. If after 15 minutes the score is still tied then the games ends in a tie.

I am for any overtime scenario that does NOT allow for a tie - and gives both teams at least one opportunity to score.

As long as the criteria above is reached, I don't care how they do it.

The only thing I would change would be having a kickoff instead of starting at the 25. That gives your special teams a chance to really contribute, allows for the kicking team to attempt an onside kick, and forces the receiving team to establish a drive.

After either scoring or failing to score, the team would then kickoff to the other team. In the case of the kicking team recovering an onside kick, if they score, then game over.

y'all are forgetting why they put it on the 25 for college and 10 for hs. these guys just played 60 minutes of football, and extending the game for another however many minutes. making them start from further away is making them even more tired and prone to injuries.

personally i like the rules. 25 yards, if you don't gain another yard, is 42 yd field goal, not a gimme by anyone's standards.

I used to hate the NFL overtime rules, but after seeing 5,6,7, etc. overtime games and how they play out, I now favor the way the NFL does it. That being said, I don't like the fact that a tie is still possible.
I think the college system would work much better if each team started out at the 50. I'm pretty sure players get tired after playing 8 overtimes, too.

I too like the current OT rules. Personally, I cannot stand any sport that allows a game to end in a tie. One team should win and one should lose.

I hate the NFL rule with the first team to score wins. I would leave it like it is and maybe move it back to the 40. That way you dont start in FG range.

Aren't hockey and soccer the only "major" sports that allow for tie games? I guess that otherwise you could have a hockey game that could last for a couple of weeks in OT.

But, if you gain 5 yards, it's a 37 yard field goal, which should be made 80% of the time by a D1 kicker, IMO.

I'm in favor of the 35 or 40 yard line to start.

If a game reaches OT, if you score a TD then you have to go for two.

2nd OT, you can't kick FG, must score TD.

3rd OT, you start at the 2 1/2 yd line, 1 play. If TD, then go for 2. If not, next teams try.

I like the format just the way it is, except, as you mentioned, the wacky scores. It's not a popular opinion, but I am for keeping the current rules, but only count the score in the deciding overtime.

In other words, if the regulation game ended at 24-24 tie, then both teams scored TD's in the first two overtimes, then one team kicks a field goal and the other scores the winning TD in the 3rd OT, I think the final score should be 30-27, NOT the 44-41 score that we would see presently.

Regarding padding the stats... that's simple to "solve" - just don't count OT stats at all, or just count the stats for last possession for each team.

I have this argument often with friends. I am no fan of the college overtime. Four-plus overtimes is too many and the scoring gets out of control. Defensive stats look bad while all they may have done is give up two or three redzone touchdowns. How many times do we hear and say that special teams wins or loses games? Then why does it not get a legitamate place in college overtime?

I'm biased because I'm an NFL fan but I do think it is much better than college. I just don't believe that a team didn't have a chance to win if the receiving team scores on its opening drive. Your chance was to have the defense make a stop and get the ball back with good field position.

One potential wrinkle. Sudden death only applies if the opening drive yields a touchdown but does not apply if the opening drive only yields a field goal. After that, first team to take a lead wins.

Did anyone else see the Green Bay v. Denver Monday Night game earlier this year when Favre threw the bomb for a TD on the first play of overtime? That was the most exciting ending to a football game I saw all year. The whole game was good but the end was great!

Anyway, just my thoughts.

They actually start at the 25, but I agree with your point. I would start at the 50 so the teams would have to earn the opportunity to attempt a field goal by making a first down or two.
