Colonoscopy is less than 3 weeks away. Getting more and more apprehensive about it. I am hearing horror stories from people that showed no outward symptoms but ended up diagosed with colon or rectal cancer. Now I am showing no symptoms that anything is wrong. I seem healthy but at my last few check-ups my white cell count was a bit high.

Don't do this...if it is cancer then you and they can deal with it. You will get it out and go on with your life. VERY CURABLE. At your age if you have polyps they are probably precancerous and can be snipped out while you snooze...been there and done that.

There are a thousand reasons for your white count to be elevated. Take it from an old GI nurse who has had 3 colonoscopies, this is one of the easiest things you will ever do. The rate of colon cancer without symptoms is very low. You've got this.

How out of it am I going to be after the test is over? I am just curious about my rest of day.
You will wake up quickly and feel pretty good but your reaction time might be just a little bit slow. Legally you can't drive for 24 hours. The average person will drive the next morning 24 hours or not. They might even tell you that you have to have someone stay with you over night but most single people don't. Pick out a good place to eat on the way home.

Because you will be hungry.

I have seen some stuff online that says don't eat anything too crazy. Like specifically no steak or hard to digest stuff for 24 hours.

They will tell you in your discharge instructions nothing too spicy or greasy. People eat whatever they want. The All-Star at Waffle House would taste pretty good afterwards. Don't believe all the crazy stuff people say about this procedure. Some people are just really big wimps. If you could stomach watching that game last night you are not a wimp. ;)

The person taking me has said she would stay with me as long as needed or would take me to eat whatever I wanted. She had it done a few years ago and said it wasn't too bad and was really ok after and did not need anything special.

I have family history of polyps and began getting screened @ 40. I'm 59 now and very thankful I went early. On initial screen at 40, they found pre cancerous polyps. Since then I go every three- five years.

I forced my wife to go at 50 and they found cancer but thank the good lord were able to remove. Now she goes as regularly asI do.

The prep is the worst. but after the procedure at least for me, feel pretty good. Hungry, for sure. Good luck!

so the doctor texted me to let me know I can pick up the stuff at the pharmacy. They said I will get a call after I pick up the stuff. So how long does the stuff keep? Do I have to schedule immediately or can I wait until after the holiday? I just don't want to eat broth for the 4th.
For goodness sake do not start drinking that stuff until you know for sure that your colonoscopy is tomorrow. If you start tonight and they call and say, "Okay, see you on Friday," you will go through all that for nothing and have to redo it tomorrow night.

Do not worry. Think about Colonel Abel in Bridge of Spies: "Would it help?"
Symptomatic or asymptomatic, you will be fine.
Most likely you will get good news, or at worst, they snipped a polyp off. Even if they do find something, worrying now won't help.

I just picked the stuff up and that is it. It is still sitting here on my counter. The appointment isn't until the 29th.

Can't help it. I have a friend that told me her friend that had zero symptoms and went in for what she thought was just a routine thing. She has Stage 3 rectal cancer. She tells me this story after I scheduled mine. So I am getting more and more apprehensive the closer the day gets.

I understand. I hope you get a clean bill of health.

I was age 54 before I got a colonoscopy. I got it because my doctor said traces of blood was discovered in a stool test. Since my mother died from colon cancer I was concerned. Fortunately no polyps were found so it must have been from hemorrhoids or possibly an anal fissure. After the procedure was over I really broke the post-exam rules. My brother drove me there because I have no spouse but after it was over I felt really good but hungry, so on the way home me and my brother stopped at McDonalds. We had left from my brother's home so after we returned there I drove myself home without any problems. In Jan. it'll be 10 years so it's time for one again.
