Not that I would want this situation to ever befall us, just playing "what if". If McElroy were unable to play, how do you think McCarron would perform? Do you think we could win the big games ? Also, would our offense scheme change to a more passing offense. I started thinking about this when Mac's shoulder/ankle was injured in the Arkansas game. What's your opinion?

Yes. I think it would be more difficult with the upper echelon times like Florida.

But don't forget - the Sabanator won an SEC title with a backup and managed to two-head QB his way to a national title. Rohan Davey was not exactly Peyton Manning, y'know.

I think if Mack Brown had done that last year then the excuses would be more hollow than they are.

It would be difficult on the road against a good team (USCe or LSU), but I do think he can pull it off.

I don't think we'd change our offensive "personality" b/c AJ is more of a gunslinger than GMac. We play to our personnel and we have the 2 best RBs in the SEC with an OL that is VERY good at run blocking.

Well, If you think GMac is a game manager then I would say absolutely yes. The kid can make the throws. It would come down to his decision making in the passing game but if he slipped then CNS would put Mark in the wildcat to make up for it.

Yes, I think we can win, probably have some bumps along the way. BTW, if you've heard anything about GM's shoulder, you know more than I. So far, all I've heard is the ankle and a thigh bruise...

I have more confidence in AJ this year than I did in GMac two years ago. Whether that confidence is well-placed may be argued, but this is a thread about opinions, isn't it? :cool2:

AJ has all the talent plus he's been holding the clipboard for two seasons already. I think he'd do fine. All he needs is game experience and there's nothing like a good old baptism of fire if the need should arise. (which we hope it doesn't)

I would have to say, without a doubt, AJ can and will win big games. I base my opinion on what I have seen from him this year, but also we should remember that he impressed CNS so much last year that if it had been GMac that went down in the NC, CNS would have burned his RS and brought in AJ, not SJ. AJ has been impressing the coaches for over a year, and if our staff believes in him, so do I. Add to that the fact I have seen him make good throws and good decisions in games this year, and I have to say that while we all pray nothing happens to Gmac, I would have full confidence in AJ to run the offense. Mark and Trent would take a huge load off his shoulders. We have the best receiving corps in the conference (IMO) so I think he could have a lot of success. I am actually excited knowing that after this year, Gmac leaves us in great hands with AJ. ROLL TIDE!

Talent is not the question...it's composure.

We know GMac can keep his composure when trailing in the 4th Quarter on the road. We have no clue how AJ would do in that kind of situation. He definitely has the talent and the brains...just not sure yet on the balls. And I hope we never have to worry about that...even when he is the starter. ;)

In all probability, if AJ were forced into the starting role today, we would lose games that we would have won with GMac. If I had to bet my mortgage on any young QB making his first run through the meat of an SEC regular season, I would confidently bet against him going undefeated. GMac has been an exception, but that is because he is an exceptional player. Maturity, intelligence, and poise are his key attributes. At the times when he lost it last year (as could be expected of anyone), we had a Heisman trophy winner behind him to run the wildcat, and one of the greatest, most complete defenses to ever step on an college field.

In his appearances this year, I have been impressed with AJ. I think he has a grasp of the offense and plenty of talent to perform. My guess is that with AJ's "slinger" reputation, the staff would try to rein him in if he were to have to start an SEC game rather than just mop one up. I think that's what's happening at Auburn right now - they know that Newton can (and probably would) lose a few games if they ask him to pass too many times. He's also good enough with his feet to have gotten them by, so far.

I wouldn't be depressed facing the prospect that AJ was our starter the rest of the way, but I'm not in any hurry for #12 to leave.

This is one of those curious questions fans always ponder, and to discover the actual answer is the last thing any fan of our team desires. AJ has the talent and the smarts from what he has shown thus far. But you never know how a young man will respond to that 4th qtr pressure until he is placed in that position.

Back in the Early 90s, I, like a lot of fans, had a 'love-frustration' (never hate) relationship with J. Barker. He was the consummate game manager and actually had a great arm and could make all the throws. But he had a terrible tendency to go high and wide on many throws. And me, like many others, wondered how the backup would do. Then we learned. Jay went down to an injury and the games he missed were a nightmare. I learned my lesson as a fan about wanting the next guy. Not saying anyone is wanting that to happen to Greg. I know none of you do. But when I see Gmac take a big hit or hobbling on the sideline, I get nervous, no matter how great we know the next guy (AJ in this case) will be when his time comes.

I think it is more appropriate to refer to McElroy as a leader than as a "game manager". He obviously is intelligent, experienced, and talented but due to the stars around him and the role he is asked to play he doesn't get the recognition he often deserves.

I think AJ is going to be a good QB for us but when he took the sack at Duke it became obvious why he is our #2 QB. That was a classic mistake made by an inexperienced player that isn't accustom to the speed of the game. He will grow up and grow out of that...I just hope he doesn't have to grow up with an SEC team directly ahead.

I've seen GMac take sacks like that to..AJ will be fine if called upon..He's been in the system long enough to know exactly what to do & what's expected of our QB's..Plus having Ingram & TR behind him helps a lot..JMO

AJ is in perfect position to inherit this offense next year. He's in the same position that GMac was in a couple of years ago while sitting behind JPW, except AJ is probably more ready now than GMac was JPW's senior year.

For you older folks, what we are seeing with CNS and the last two qbs at Bama is what I remember under another pretty well know coach who used to roam the sidelines in T-town. Back in those days (courtesy of no internet) we hardly ever heard of a Bama qb until he was a Jr. or Sr. because they were waiting their turn.

AJ is waiting his turn and PS will wait on his too. They'll both be better because they held the clip board and learned rather than being thrown in to the fiery trial too early.

But to answer the OP's questions, I think AJ could play and play well right now, but he'd suffer a few mistakes as he got more game experience but I think would still win with others picking up the slack!

Your comments reminded me of the first game I ever attended- the 94 home gm verse UGA. While everyone knows the story quite well of that famous game, what you never hear mentioned is there were times in that gm where the crowd started chanting "Freddie, Freddie". There were fans at that time who thought the untested, highly touted backup Freddie Kitchens should be on the field instead of one of Bamas all time winningest QBs who had just led the team to a NC a little over a year prior. Very, very sad, but very true. Its something I will never forget. Thankfully, CGS knew what kind of a winner JB was. Is that the backup you were thinking of? RTR
