Coach Ivan Jones was at Foley , a legend certainly himself, when I was in high school at Fairhope in the mid-60s. They were our main rival back then in all sports. Don`t know if that`s still the same now with more schools now on the Eastern Shore.

I've been at practice years ago when Coach Jones - who was in his late 70's or early 80's - was getting down in a 3-pt stance to show lineman how to fire off the line. Pretty amazing.

Here's an article in Sports Illustrated from 1984 talking about Coach Bull Sullivan who Coach Smith played for at Scooba, MS (E. Miss. JC - the same one of Last Chance U fame a few years ago). SI named Sullivan the "Toughest Coach There Ever Was" in this article by Frank Deford.

When my wife and I first met and I first met Coach Smith, he was talking about some of these crazy stories from when he played JC ball. Particularly the story about playing with no pads on. I said "I've got an SI magazine that talks about that!" ... sure enough, I went back home and found it in my archives. There are a couple pages just about Coach Smith in the article.

Those were the days when you were considered a sissy and a mama`s boy if you asked for water during practice.
