pretty sound recap I pulled from TI this morning...
We were still running alot of the high post, but it looks better with proven big men and quality guards. Last season the only person we really had that could catch the ball in rhythm and consistantly knock down shots was Steele, which didn't help much since he was the PG. Riley will definitely fill that void. Saw alot less of the "standing around" we did the first half of last season. We're going to be much deeper at guard than last year with several freshman that can actually handle the ball (big weakness last year was the lack of a true 2G with ball-handling ability). I'm not sure how many will actually see minutes/not RS, but I'd expect Mikhail Torrence to get some minutes at both guard spots.
JD, Hendrix, and Jemison all showed the ability to step out and knock down the 15-18 footer. Coleman even hit one but I'm not sure we want him shooting that shot yet.
I'd expect Hollinger to probably start out the season, but if it were up to me I'd start Steele, Riley, Gee, Hendrix, JD with Hollinger as the primary backup at PG, Torrance logging minutes at both PG and SG.
I really like Riley although he's doesn't appear as physical nor the leaper as Gee, he runs the floor really well and has a quick smooth release. Kind of reminds me a little of a Ray Allen type. I think Coleman and Jemison will give us solid minutes off the bench (more productive than the minutes we got from Brock). Jemison held his own with Hendrix pretty well, and while undersized is physical and knows how to use his body.
Steele looks better than ever, I think he'll benefit this season from knowing he doesn't HAVE to play 40 minutes, so he can go all-out while he's in there.
These guys were split up for the scrimmage, but I think when you bring this entire unit together we're going to have MUCH, MUCH improved depth from the ol' 7 man roster we had last year. 40 minutes of hell? (g).
