I think their best bet would have been to move up 20 years ago when Troy, Jax State and UT Martin all left the GSC for greener pastures. I hope they can make the move, but without an invitation from an FCS league, it is impossible even though they seem to have the money lined up.
Perhaps they can get into the OVC if someone leaves (Jax State and Eastern Kentucky are both looking to move up if the Sun Belt asks them). The SoCon would work geographically, but I don't see that happening.
The SWAC would be the best fit as far as travel goes and it would be fun to see everyone's reactions, but that won't happen.
You're right. Their dominance in the 90s came on the heels of those schools leaving GSC and DII (not taking anything away from UNA. They were very good during the three-peat). They have maintained a high level of competition although I would say that West Alabama has surpassed them. One of UNA's "greats" (Will Hall) is coaching in Livingston. I like the idea of them moving up, but I don't know where they would fit. With some teams leaving the SoCon, I would like to see them get in that conference but I know that will never happen, especially since the OVC turned them down. Hopefully they will get an invite somewhere. And yes, the SWAC fiscally makes more sense but that also would never happen for obvious reasons. The Southland Conference would be a good place for them to land.
