It’s strange that Alabama use to be a huge NASCAR stronghold, now many in the state pay absolutely no attention to it. This board pays no attention to NASCAR.
We( my family) use to attend a few races , mostly destination races. Like camping in the Pocono’ s for the Pocono races, or the finger lakes for Watkins Glen. We did the 500, then the night races at Daytona because the 500 was always cold even When it was 75 degrees, but we planned a midsummer vacation around the night race. That was until NASCAR took that away from us with a schedule change. Anyway, I haven’t been a dedicated NASCAR fan, but some of the races are really good and worth the attention. I watch maybe 5 or 6 per year. The season is too long.
As we are about to start the NASCAR season with the 500, why so few people watch NASCAR, and will you watch any of the 500 . For better or worse, Trump will be there, and I will watch. I find it a little strange that my inlaws and their friends that live in Maryland are much bigger fans than the people from the home of the Worlds Fastest Motorspeedway and the Alabama Gang.

The cars have nothing in common with the cars on the dealer's showroom. EVERYTHING is corporate, there is nothing organic about this sport. It's 500 miles of advertising mix with a Ticktoc short of racing. Don't waste your time, just watch the Ticktoc short.

I grew up watching short track racing and drag racing. I loved cars and racing and admired the drivers who pioneered NASCAR and all other forms for that matter. Today the vast majority of the cars represented in the series are facsimiles of front wheel drive appliances sold at dealers today. In fact however, the cars on NASCAR tracks are only metal templates to look similar to Ford's or Toyotas ect. I have no idea what engine is in them but suspect that they come from the same engine builders. There is no competition between the manufacturers as there was in NASCARS heyday. I haven't watched a race in years.

I lost a lot of interest when they introduced the Playoff/Postseason format (shocker...lol)

It just really diminished the 'regular season' for me because drivers weren't as aggressive anymore and you had a lot of guys playing it safe and that led to a lot less excitement.

I have never understood the appeal of cars driving to the left for several hours. And yes I have been to a live race. It was incredibly boring.
There is a lot of strategy involved wrt the tires used and tire pressure and how fast they burn through gas and when you try to hit the pits to make adjustments in addition to the actual driving/racing.

But for me it's a lot less interesting now since it seems like they are just coasting along at 200mph instead of racing at 200mph.

They use to really intimidate each other and pick and choose when to cause wrecks and get in fights and stuff.. you even had teammates working together to blockade other drivers to manipulate where guys finished to affect point totals.

But it's not like that so much now.

Drivers don't race with the same urgency anymore. It's kind of how losing 2 games in CFB is no big deal anymore because you can still make the playoffs anyway.
