Some players will shut down if you scream at them. Some players will run through a brick wall and win you the game.
I think the problem is - in this day and age of NIL, the transfer portal, social media, and the kids just generally being more prima donna-ish than ever - players are infinitely more likely to respond to screaming/"hard coaching" in the former manner instead of the latter. Why play somewhere you have some jerk yelling at you all day when you could go somewhere else where the coach is "nicer" and you still make a bajillion dollars?

I'd say the "old days" of coaches screaming and belittling players are going the way of the dodo. In some respects, it's because kids are softer and that style no longer works. But in other ways, coaches are becoming more sophisticated on the mental side of the game and figuring out better ways to motivate players than just jumping down their throats...

Water hose and salt tablets…even if you were good you got daily ass chewings. This will probably get me in trouble, but even though we were kids then, it made us tougher men. I wish today’s kids could have it the way my age group had it for a minute…
Shoot I’d still fight for some of those guys…

I wish there was a way to meet in the middle.

I grew up when discipline was both strict at times but also showed some leniency at times.

Today it’s almost nothing but leniency and that creates soft athletes and young adults.

I like to see FIRE in a coach, didn't happen last year.
It's time for DeBoer to step up and show some emotion when the situation deems it appropriate.
I recall him getting fired up bigly over a bad call by the refs. Can't remember which play it was. But he was mad as all get out. It was late season, and I had never seen him get that worked up.

Sounds like we played about the same time Ols. The smell of fresh cut grass still makes me nauseous thinking about summer practices. I remember being so thirsty and de-hydrated that I was sucking the sweat out of my tshirt I put on underneath my shoulder pads. I agree with still fighting for some of those guys and we still get together and tell old stories.

Can’t remember who it was but I believe it was when we had the fake injury because they didn’t stop the offense to let us make a substitution after the offense subbed out players.

My grandson just finished his rec league baseball -- 10-12 yr olds. The quality of baseball was pathetic...and the coaching was just as bad. No fundamentals, no teaching of strategy or preparation...my grandson pitched 3 no hit innings...gave up 2 unearned runs, and did not pitch until tonight -- no runs and no hits in 1 innings. He's not big, a lefty , and can throw strikes. The coach had no clue....they wound up 4-4 after losing the first 4. I coached my sons back in the 1990's and their teams would have destroyed these teams.

OK...enough ranting. Supposedly the better players are on travel ball -- but my son does not want his son to get into that just yet. I understand--enjoy life a bit. My grandson made the all star team but will miss the game on a family vacation to Jamaica. He's not especially torn up about it and I'm glad.

He and I will play a lot of golf this summer!

That's part of the problem with today's society. People don't honor commitments -- crappy teams or not. It makes it hard to hold anybody accountable when parents just do whatever they want. I'm on the back side of my career as a teacher and that sort of mentality has me counting down the days. I'm tired of sacrificing my family time and energy when other people just don't care.

I studied judo and played tennis; individual sports....

Because we lived in Alabama my parents signed me up in 65 lb football as a youngster. (I'd already had years of judo and tennis under my belt.)

The first day of football practice -- just after roll call -- this short fat assistant coach with a stub of an unlit cigar in the side of his mouth started yelling at our group of 11-13 year-olds. (I'd never had an instructor yell at me in me other two sports.)

"We're gonna toughen y'all babies up! Don't come cryin' to us if your scratched finger is bleeding! Y'all are gonna block and block and block ... until you throw up from all the blockin'. Then you're gonna block some more!

"Water breaks are when WE tell you they are! And if any of you babies need to go to the bathroom -- well you just pee or crap right in y'all's pants! You're here for football and football only!"

I remember thinking at that very moment, "That fat man is CRAZY."

I told my dad about the coaches rant, and told Dad not to tell Mom. We were not quitters in our family, so I played that whole season. My first and last season of football.

Yep. We had both kinds in Pee-wee. Always won more with the saner, smarter coaches.

I basically agree--- but it was just one game against another team of "all starts" from the same league. My problem was the lack of teaching and discipline on the team...the next to last game we played -- we won -- but we only had 8 players. Only 2 outfielders but somehow won anyway. At least the coach didn't rail at them...he just smiled and rarely corrected them.

This is what is now left in league ball. All of the good coaches are no longer in league baseball. They are in travel/tournament baseball. It's been this way for years now. I hate travel/tournament baseball but it is the only baseball platform that puts the kids with good coaching and good competition.

With SEC Officiating, it would be disappointing if he didn't...
