Completely out schemed and out coached. Their OC > Our DC.

We were running the same basic defensive scheme every 3rd down....and dare I say we were doing the same vs UGA on 4th down.

Too predictable, too easy to out scheme. Wommack either couldn't or wouldn't adjust.

If he couldn't....then DeBoer needs a new DC at the end of the year...after we've given up 40+ points every remaining game.

If he wouldn't....then DeBoer needs a new DC now because the dude is going to ruin his career.
In one interview Wommack said they didn't change things up too much in the first half because the players were already confused and not handling things well and there were trying to get them to do their jobs. They felt like the scheme would work if the players would execute it.

I don't know... my impression is that our defensive players are still learning the system and we have plenty of work ahead of us. And playing an old options system you never see is tough... I think as pointed out with GA Southern against one of best defenses in our program history.

I think we don't have a great option other than to let Kane work it out and see where everything ends up this year.

So this tells me we don't have anyone on Defense like a Rolando McClain that call the adjustments on the field. Probably because they don't really know the Defense well enough.
That was my take. They should be able to look at the offensive alignment and guess the defensive call, then adjust when they get it. But that sounds like the defenders have no idea what the offense is doing based on personnel and alignment.

Do they not study film anymore? This is puzzling. Hopefully I am reading too much into it.

Why can't we send the call in with an option to audible. Let the QB of the D make the call after the call from the coaches is in.
well, I'm kinda guessing that this is Wommack trying to use the new in-helmet connectivity a little too creatively. Lawson has wommack in his ear until 15 seconds left on the play clock, and I'd guess wommack is trying to hold calls until then instead of making a call and trusting Lawson to change if needed. Total guess on that though. Either way, they need to get a call in quick with formation reads they can adjust to or that wommack can send adjustments to through the headset.

Don't know what to make of this but I don't feel great about it
That was very gently throwing Wommack toward the front of the bus. Not really under the bus, but getting him in the position where it's easier to get him there if things don't get fixed. MM did give the staff some credit on the film work and trying to get this fixed, but this type of stuff makes it seem like the staff might not have the absolute trust of the team.

It’s ain’t scheme, it’s effort and tackling. That’s all defense is. We relaxed in the second half of UGA and didn't learn a thing from it because of Hollywood’s spectacular bailout of the team. Then we walk into Vandy with a week off and a chip on their shoulder with a QB who’s been running that offense for years and tons of swagger. A team of talent and inflated egos that got a mouthful of humble pie shoved down their throat.

Can't agree here....yeah, effort and tackling is involved...but watching the film you can see we get predictable on critical downs and get taken advantage of.

We kept playing a base cover 1 from what I understand....even on the play Pavia ran for a first down to ice the game...Malachi was 18 yards off the ball and we didn't have the numbers in the box to stop the run.

We consistently kept running that and never had the numbers to stop the run. We were predictable.

If they are getting paid to play and expect to play in the NFL...then they should be doing this or at least working on learning how to do this.

I'm enjoying a nice two week vacation, but here's my take. We were just plain unprepared to play Vandy last week. I don't know what we prepared for but it wasn't Vandy. Maybe we were still living the dream from the Georgia game. Plus, we ran into a gutty little QB that just couldn't miss anything. I think we came in expecting to just walk over Vandy, and instead they punched our defense in the mouth and we folded. We could hardly stop anything they did. Hopefully it was a BIG wake up call, because we need it after that performance.

our defense is the equivalent of “Darby up the middle”

Let's face it guys. This team is lacking the 3D's right now. Drive-Dedication-Discipline. And it's not all on CKD and staff either. This has been a progressive culture for several years now. I ain't granting a pass (as if would matter) but it's gonna take a little time for this new coaching regime to figure out the weekly battle that is the SEC. WE "survived" the UGA game that should have been a wakeup call, but obviously wasn't. All the yapping before, during and after the Vandy coin toss, if it truly happened, and me thinks it did, is just a telltale that this team thought they could roll out their helmets then head south with the dub. We'll find out over the next 3 weeks just how well this staff and field leaders can get and stay motivated. I realize we got USCe this Saturday but going into Knoxville is gonna reveal A LOT about this team.

They have built in checks to motion and other adjustments. Then comes the fun part, adjusting to the adjustments. Any decent coaching staff is going to throw some shifts and motions in to see how you react. Do you run with him, roll down a safety and go one high, bump a linebacker out of the box, etc. Do you run the same coverage every time to the same look? Unfortunately that is what has got us the last 6 quarters is the opposition knows what we will be in when they give us certain formations. Every defense has a weakness and once you know what you will get, you can exploit that weakness. As we have all said, adjustments have to be made and the players will have to adjust. What's for certain is we can't keep doing what we have been doing.

I expect to see more of this. The NIL has created a two tier system of the rich and the poor players. The rich ones are more talented yes, but they have money in the bank and money means distractions. The poor players have no distractions. and they are angry, and they aren't bad athletes. They are still division 1 level athletes. We are talking a bit of speed, an inch in height. We aren't talking a huge difference like a high school player vs pee wee. In a street fight sometimes the lesser fighter wins because he's freakin unhinged angry. Vandy played that way all night. If I were Vandy fans I would be beside myself with pride. Meanwhile our guys crank up their sports cars and go back to their high end apartments and work on their podcasts. Am I exaggerating to make a point? probably, am I totally off base? nope. The college coaches have not really figured out how to manage this. It's not just our problem either.

At this point I'm wondering myself.
Still think it's MM on defense, but we won't really know for sure until more adversity sets in.
Offense is obviously JM, and I think he's drastically improved, but he still shows flashes of last year at times. Question is, will the followers follow?

It definitely is a factor but I'd argue entitlement has been around for quite sometime. Being a 5 star and getting paraded around can definitely make you sit on your laurels. Its why Coach Saban's most talked about thing through the media and to his team was this topic. NIL definitely has thrown gasoline on an already big issue.
