Derrick Thomas sack record

This is as good a place as any to share: http://www.espn.com/college-footbal...ck-thomas-remembered-qbs-sacked-record-season

Former Mississippi State quarterback Tony Shell can curl his tongue into the back left corner of his mouth and remember the time Derrick Thomas hit him 30 years ago. It was the last Saturday in October, overcast and damp inside Davis Wade Stadium, and Shell made the mistake of not wearing a mouthpiece when Thomas, Alabama's once-in-a-generation pass-rusher, tracked him down in the backfield, lowered his head and delivered the crushing blow.Thomas' helmet met squarely with Shell's face mask, cracked the quarterback's tooth and added yet another memento to what would go down as an unforgettable season.
"When it happened," Shell said, "the hit, I saw a spark."

Remember when DT sacked him 7 times in ONE game!!??

While seeing a little of Army in the bowl game yesterday, I thought of Bama being unprepared for Army's wishbone in the 1988 Sun Bowl. I also remembered Thomas blocking two field goals in that 29-28 win.

This is one of those records that will never get broken. He dang near had 8 in that game. Only Derrick himself ever came close to breaking the record. He once sacked Elway 6 times in 3 quarters. That game was a blowout so he sat out the rest of the game.

DT's first step was unbelievably quick.......then he accelerated!

And DT came in on the heels of Cornelius Bennett, whom I originally thought might go down as the best LB in Bama history......Bama's been turning out top notch LB's for a while now....

He should have won the Heisman, and he would have if that trophy had any legitimacy.

This is Thomas' actual stat line from the 1988 season: 88 tackles, 12 tackles for loss, 27 sacks, 44 quarterback pressures and two blocked kicks.

7.3 tackles per game, 3.6 quarterback hurries, 2.25 sacks per game, and 1.0 tackles for a loss per game is far superior to Woodson's campaign numbers.

He spent more time in the backfield than most RB's.

That was my freshman year at UA so I was there for the home games. What DT did that year was unbelievable. As incredible as the stats are I don't think they accurately show how dominant of a player he actually was that year. RIP DT, you were the greatest!

Derrick Thomas invented the statistic known as QB sacks. No one recorded the event until Thomas dominated the line of scrimmage. He affected 55 passes that year in college. His rookie year in the NFL, Thomas set the record with 6 sacks in a game.

When watching the game against Memphis State in Memphis, Thomas made a big hit and my FIL said he thought the big linebacker (Bennett) was no longer around. I don't think he believed me when I told him this one was supposed to be even better.

Thomas was great and all but that really isn't true. Thomas did set the record and it is 7.
