Was watching HBO's the "Wild Ride to Super Bowl 1" the other day. During the latter part of the show they were talking about the lack of attendance for the game. They scanned across the crowd and there in the stands is a guy holding up a sign that said "ALABAMA #1". I nearly fell out of my seat in laughter. Even with it being the NFL's first Super Bowl, we still have our fans out there voicing their opinion. ROLL TIDE ROLL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wasn't that the year they asked Vince Lombardi how it felt to be the best team in the country and he said "I don't know about that we haven't beaten Alabama yet?" Lombardi had a lot of respect for Coach Bryant and Alabama and vice versa. Bart Starr may also have had something to do with that. :)

I've always thought that statement meant a whole lot more than any sportswriter's poll.

Of course, I guess I am a little bit biased, being a Bama fan first and a Packer fan second.

Sooo, since he proclaimed us #1 should we have gotten a trophy after all? ;)

Too funny!!! What you suggested would make alot of sense around Clay County. What you think? Afterall it was a unanimous vote, seen on TV sine there were no cardboard signs proclaiming ND or MSU #1.

You guys must not have been

around that year. They just happened to be the best football team ever. A biased poll chose teams with a blemished record to co share the MNC rather than give the Bear his third straight. He even offered on tv to play 'em both just to see. No one would take him up on it.

I remember '66.

Glad you folks jogged my memory. I had forgotten about that season for BAMA. I would love to know if any of the producers of that documentary are BAMA fans.

ROLL TIDE ROLL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The DVD of THAT BAMA team dis-mantling a pretty good Nebraska team in the Sugar Bowl, January 2, 1967 (Alabama 34, Nebraska 7) is available for a nominal fee.

There is a big difference between the '66 BAMA team that finished #3 in the polls and the '04 Auburn team that finished #2 in the polls.

In '66, BAMA was clearly the best college team in the country.

In '04, USC was clearly the best college team in the country.

But it's a moo point anyway, because in division 1A college football, national championships are and have always been "mythical".

I believe the '66 BAMA team would have beaten the '64 and '65 BAMA teams.

There's a hypothetical for you, what with all the players that were seniors on the '66 team having to play on all three.

No, I was around and I feel it was the greatest injustice ever done by polls. When one considers that the 2 preceeding years we won the NC with blimished records (thats not intended as criticism) and then to go undefeated that 3rd year, anything PSU or ua has claimed as injustice is petty. Correct me if I'm wrong but MSU was ineligible for a bowl and ND refused an invitation? I do recall people of the state of Alabama driving in the daytime with their lights on in protest, so to speak.

If I would have seen that I would have had chills up and down my body. I also would have lmao! We are the best loyal fans out there. I know, being that I live with three Auburn fans, that when the Barn looses, they don't talk about them until they win again. Such closet fans!

Correct if I'm wrong on this. Was this not the year when we saw the sign at a BAMA game that said "BAMA plays football, Notre Dame plays politics".

ROLL TIDE ROLL!!!!!!!!!!

What's Clay County got to do with it? Is that where the paper that declared au national champions is located? I thought it was a south Alabama paper. I think Lineville is the largest city in Clay County and I'm pretty sure that wasn't the paper?

Let's go ahead and take it now and celebrate...........after all, there isn't a Statute of Limitations on something that is Mythical anyways!
