So, after many a scheduling screwup, I finally get DirecTV over to the new house to do an install. After the installer finishes everything he tells me about a box he is willing to sell me for $400 that will get me all the channels (PPV, Movies channels, etc).

I couldn't help but chuckle. Nice side racket he's got going.

i bet if you called of DirectTV customer service and gave them a piece of your mind about that incident and threaten to turn them into the PSC, they would probably set you up pretty nicely with most of those channels for the basic price

I don't know about a box but there are cards that you can get that give you all that channels. Illegal of course but realatively inexpensive...40 bucks or so. The only problem is DTV can zap you and then you've lost 40 bucks and have to do it all over again.

not only that, but Comcast used to send out a signal that would zap the card and fry the box. My buddies and I had to buy a couple of boxes back in the day.

This is stealing, plain and simple. You should definitely call DirecTV. Not only is it the right thing to do, but what this guy is doing is worse than stealing. He is betraying his employer...

I had a descrambler wayyyyyy back before I got Direct tv. It worked for about 4 years before they messed up our signal.

Heh...my first thought when the installer told me this was, "Whoah! $400 is way too much!" I've never done any hacking of signals but I read up on it some a couple of years back out of curiosity and though things have changed since then I don't think they have changed to the tune of $400.

My second thought was wondering if I should report him. I still think I may. Idiots like him do nothing but raise my cost of receiving channels legally.

My third thought was to jokingly blackmail him into giving me his magic descrambling box for free. :D

LOL - not saying that I would not have had the same thoughts, but I hope that my integrity would keep me honest...

You may have been doing it all wrong. I had a neighbor who was pirating DTV for several years. He had a computer program running between either the TV and the DTV box or before the DTV box I forget, that kept it from frying anything but the card. I think he said a website notified them if they knew a zap was coming down the pike. He used an old POS laptop. Don't know if he still does it, he isn't my neighbor any longer. But I used to go to his house to watch PPV fights and such.

Oh no, not betraying his employer!! Why exactly is that worse than stealing? Did I miss a commandment? Employers routinely screw over their employees down here in the blue collar world. You cant seriously be up on this high of a moral equine. roll tide roll.

If you feel that way then don't be a blue collar worker.

I guess stealing is wrong unless you can justify it in your own mind, huh?

A lot of questions for what should be unquestionable concepts.

Unless you are you dense you know that stealing is wrong.

If you feel that being cheated by your employer comes with being a blue collar worker (and therefore justify stealing as a way to get even), then I suggest you reevaluate your career choices and your notion of right and wrong.

More questions?

I think what Bodhi's trying to say is: If a person feels like his employer is giving him the shaft, he should go somewhere else where he's going to be treated better.

Doing something illegal (such as selling/installing pirate signal-breaking equipment) is only going to cost him the job that he so despises anyway. Not to mention the potential for criminal fines and possible time behind bars.

Then, there is that whole notion of aiding and abetting the pirating of satellite signals.

Exactly, Slab.

I figure CD knows this, but can't admit his error. Let's not go down this road edit by BT

Or, perhaps CD is a willful simpleton in need of a dictionary and a copy of the Ten Commandments to expand the horizons of both his vocabulary and his notion of right and wrong.
