Do fans cause more problems than we think...?

To some this might sound farfetched and crazy, but I am a firm believer that the more involved and "obessed" a fanbase is, the more potential problems that can arise. Think about it, we BAMA fan dig and dig and dig for an tiny bit of info regarding our program. We dont feel satisfied until we feel we know ever bit of anything going on with our football program. Well guess what: we should know everything that goes on!! (I also firmly believe this about other controversial issues, like the war, but thats another fight).
I cant be absolutely 100% when I say this, but why do you think the Tennessees and the USCs dont get hammered? They both know good and well they cheat, but they accept the fact that they are simply a fan. They yell and scream and support their team, and they leave it at that. Like I said, I might a little off about those particular fanbases, but I think you get my point. As long as we keep digging, we are going to find dirt. Honestly, you can think everyone runs a 100% clean program, but I would bet the house most major, competitive programs do a little bit of cheating knowingly to get an advantage, because in a business, you do anything that has a higher reward than risk.
Now I dont think this most recent incident was affected by our fans, but as involved as our fans are in recruiting (I know recruiting draws more interest now in every program, but our Tide fans some a recruiting nugget like a crack head loves his next fix), to me it seems like there is a greater chance we could catch ourselves. I in now way condone cheating, but I and everyone else know what really goes on. I think Saban runs a clean program, but even clean programs look for an edge. Many thought Stallings ran a clean program, but many might be surprised if they knew everything that went on recruiting wise in those years.

Like I said, this might sound absurd and ridiculous to some, but that just my way of thinking, that fans should play the part of a fan, and nothing more. Just got a new flame retardant suit so lemme have it.

EDIT: This is just my opinion, and I was curious to see what others' stance on this was. Im not the trying to lecture our great fanbase, as it is the best in the land.

I agree. Also believe the Internet magnifies the stupidity 10-fold. It's like giving a jack@$$ a couple of drinks. You automatically magnify his jack@$$edness. Said jack@$$ who can type and surf the Web can ... well ... spread Gadsden-like jack@$$ rumors.

I believe this statement hits the nail on the head as to what DemTide was trying to get across. It is so true. Any of us could come here and post anything. It may not stay on the board long, but it could be posted and some people would see it.

They yell and scream and support their team, and they leave it at that.
That is the majority of all fan bases. It is the minority of us that follow our programs the way we do. I spend easily over an hour each day on message boards reading what has went on that day. I listen to local sports radio whenever I am driving.

The ones of us that visit team message boards are much, much more informed as to what is going on than the "average" fan.

And some may not agree with me on this, but thats the reason why we need responsible journalistic resources, ie newspapers. I know they are 100% error-proof. But imagine what it would be like without at least a source that's dedicated to a standard of presenting the truth.

I've worked in the field of journalism before so I'm familiar with not believing everything I read on the internet off bat but to do fact-checking and looking at other resources. But like you all have noted, the average fan isn't taking time to do fact-checking ... but then again, the average American doesn't do it either.

A lot of it is really us who know to just take the time and present the truth. Include links to factual information to dispel these silly rumors. That's one of the great things about this site, many of the posers here demand facts and actual links to information before that take it as truth. And the admins are diligent to uphold these same stands to make sure rumors aren't posted on this site.

Where do I even start? Far-fetched, crazy, "obsessed", absurd, ridiculous...

I'm not sure any of those apply. I'm not sure they don't apply, though.

I don't think I understand the question. I know I don't understand the point.

Did you just insult me with praise? Or was that a back-handed compliment?

What kind of an excuse for wrongdoing is pointing at the other guy and saying he did it, too?

My apologies for failing to understand. I am a documented poor communicator.

The worst part of it is, more and more I am seeing "journalists" picking up material from message boards and reporting it as news, or at least using it as contributing material. With newspapers shutting down left and right, gutting staff, the remaining "reporters" have an easier time getting information from logging on to the Web, whether it's true or not.

Generally, I'd say any group having an obsession will cause more problems than they think.

There's a reason that the term "fanatic" is typically applied as a pejorative.
