Question: Do you dip, or have you quit dipping?

Hey, BamaNation

Has anyone here tried to quit dipping? I have used copenhagen long-cut for many years. It has been with me through "thick and thin".

I really need to quit - but, even with nicorette gum, I still find a "need" to put something in my lip. I know it might sound pathetic to non-nicotine addicts, but do any of you have some advice? :conf3:

Thanks!

I quit 25 years ago . It was easy because I found an instant substitute - cigarettes .:(

So, no other alternative? Do you worry about the possible health consequences? Of course, you do...

Have you tried chantix? I have heard good and bad about that particular drug.

I mean, so many of us are slaves to nicotine, are there not any good, proven solutions to those of us who "have no self control"?

I've yet to attempt dropping my smokes . For me , it's sort of like just something to do . I'd probably try to quit if I didn't think I'd replace my habit with another oral fixation - food . :eek2:

Chantix is a funny drug. It works for most who will take it, but one of the big side effects is having really weird and outrageous dreams. Case in point, my wife is an ER nurse and they had a pt. last week who was on Chantix and had a dream that someone was out to kill him, he woke from his sleep punching his head board furiously. He, in the process, had broken his hand. And there are more stories. I dip Skoal Mint. I quit for a few months and then pick it back up. I don't really know why? My dad has dipped for 30 years and his mouth is pretty gross. I also work in a hospital and see the surgery that mouth cancer patients must endure. Look up radical neck surgery on google and see what you find.

It's been 6 days since my last dip. It's not the nicotine, I can tell you that (I've tried cigarettes and I still crave dip just as much). I'm a dip on, dip off kind of person. I may go through a can every three days for two months, then I won't dip for three or four months.

Meh, I've had worse dreams and done worse things taking an anti-malarial. Still, I don't think I'm addicted because I can go for long periods of time without a dip, so I don't think the drug would be beneficial to me.

Could you share a couple of other stories? Some say the drug is great - yet some say they ended up wanting to commit suicide/homicide. Are these stories as common as some websites suggest? Would you take chantix; given the wonderful sites describing the radical neck surgery? Why don't you quit? (not calling any kettles black!)

Some of the girls I know that have taken Chantix say they had terrible nightmares about people or demons trying to kill them. All of my coworkers who have started taking the drug have stopped due to the dreams. As for the radical neck stuff, most of them were never tobacco users, only a small % used smokeless tobacco. But the surgeries are Freddie Kruger-like gruesome with skin and muscle flap grafts, often times parts of the tongue are taken as well. To answer your questions, no I wouldn't take Chantix, and I can lay the dip down for months and then I pick it back up. I drive a long way to work everyday and I think it's more something to do while I drive. When I'm off I dip alot less.

I have never dipped but I smoked for many years. This Thanksgiving will be my 20th anniversary of being tobacco free. I love being able to taste my food, I'm not afraid to smile and my clothes no longer smell like an old ash tray. :)

Ding! Ding!
Did the same, LCN, about 20 years ago. Quit dipping, chewing, and smoking and concentrated on smoking only. Narrowed that down to tobacco later. Just quit smoking 3 years ago. And 2 1/2 years ago. And a year ago. Except that cigarette two weeks ago...:)

Ive been dipping for at least 20 years. (Im 32) Unless Im eating or sleeping, I have a dip in my mouth all the time. I quit once for a month but the urge never even subsided a little bit. If I dont have a dip, I get really hyper, and cant concentrate on anything. I think if I didnt have dip, I would probably have to be on ADD medication.

I havent had any negative side effects.. I take good care of my teeth and go to the dentist every 6 months.. Ive never even had a cavity. But I do worry about cancer and all that, but if I wasnt dipping, I would probably still worry about cancer since everything causes cancer.

I dipped when I worked on the grounds crew when I was in college. And I was a heavy smoker for about 10 years. Quitting dip was pretty easy for me as I just smoked. Smoking was harder though, because it's so much easier to do (as in, it's not totally disgusting and unacceptable to do in public--at least it wasn't so much a few years ago but that's changing). Quite simply, what I did was use the nicotine patch for about 2 months, which gets you out of the physical habit, the routine of smoking. It was pretty hard for me to smoke when I knew there was a plethora of nicotine pulsing through my veins non-stop. Then, I weaned myself off of the patch, which was the easy part and went pretty quickly. I certainly have no regrets about quitting, either. It's nice not to have to screw around with it nor have all of the disgusting side costs associated with smoking and dipping.

In short, what's so hard about kicking nic habits is that you are going up against two things at once--the routine and the drug addiction. So you break the routine first and then kick the addiction second.

i used to dip, but i've been off of it for a few weeks. You could try mint snuff, a non-tobacco product that is similar to dip with no health risks. Go to mintsnuff.com or check out smoky mountain chew.
