Does anybody remember Brent Fullwood?

Didn't Brent Fullwood graduate from Auburn and go play for Green Bay a couple of years before he disclosed that he could not read? If I remember, wasn't Auburn sending him back through college? Also where is he now? I remember him being a good running back except on the play where "I waxed the dude".

Brent Fullwood did play for Auburn and the Packers. He was a very good college back and a decent Pro. Not sure about the reading thing though. Being a big Packers fan, it was tough to cheer for him.

Brooks was the one who couldn't read. Fullwood wasn't far behind, though; Pat Dye allowed Fullwood to play in a bowl game (the Sugar Bowl, I believe) after it was discovered that Fullwood had stopped going to any classes just a few weeks into the term.

A technicality allowed Fullwood to play--Fullwood didn't officially become academically ineligible until after the bowl game due to the date on which Auburn officialled posted grades--but Dye decision to play him didn't do any favors to Auburn's rep...particularly since it was around the same time as Jeff Burger's plagiarism scandal.

Well, see, (using current logic) Brent "didn't know" that not going to class would hurt his grades, so it was OK. ;)

Brent went to my rival high school (I went to Osceola High, he attended St. Cloud High across the county) and it was common knowledge that he was not anywhere near the vicinity of being bright. But he sure could run! I don't think he was actually illiterate, just not academically inclined and had always been sort of passed along grade to grade throughout school. Common knowledge where we grew up. How he managed to academically qualify at all is a miracle that I'm sure only Auburn knew how to manage. ;)

Stories like this make me very sad. These kids can't help the life they were brought up in. I hate seeing people make fun of them or discuss it like it was something they ASKED for. I just hope there aren't as many who fall through the educational cracks these days. I know that is wishful thinking, though.

ETA: Schools who do not help them achieve and give them a "pass" should be ashamed.

Dye was criticized in 1986 because Fullwood did not attend any classes that fall and continued to play football. He stated that Fullwood was there "for the right reasons".

What was particularly disturbing was that our school district was highly regarded during that time. I got an excellent education in that school district for my entire time through grammar school, middle school and high school. We moved a lot so I got exposed to most of the schools in the district over the course of 12 years, and none of them were what I would consider under-performing schools. But, football was king and athletes definitely got preferential treatment. Which, of course, did them no good academically but certainly got them on the field. Sad.

Rumors suggest that former Auburn running back Brent Fullwood scored a one on the exam in 1986. The lone point was awarded for writing in his name. People told Fullwood that he was mentally challenged and that he would never be able to learn new offensive schemes. The Packers' playbook must have not been rocket science because all he did was get selected to the Pro Bowl in 1989.

Wut?

Bo Jackson wasn't the brightest star in the sky either..I've heard it took him a full year of school to learn how to spell his first name..

I played with Bo and against Bo in high school/college. And yes......your assessment of his intellectual capacity is on cue. But to be fair, Bo did well in making progress. He had a real stuttering problem and still has issues with it but he married upstream and made some real progress. But in high school, he was quite challenged.

Who needs brains when you're graced with the gifts Bo received.

Fullwood is the genius who stopped attending classes in October 1986 but asked for incompletes so as to remain eligible. Dye let him play in the Citrus Bowl where they edged USC. Green Bay drafted him and his head coach, Forrest Gregg, got onto him for messing up so many times that Fullwood actually asked Gregg if he'd ever played the game. (For those who don't know Gregg is a Hall of Famer). Two years later Gregg left Green Bay to take over SMU coming off the death penalty. I guess he preferred that to dealing with Fullwood anymore.

Also, the Jeff Burger plagiarism scandal was for a psychology paper in summer class 1987. Auburn later regretted the writing habits of a different player (Eric "Deep Throat" Ramsey).

Thanks...for the replies. I know there was an Auburn Player back in the 90's that Auburn had to "recycle" back through school. I pretty sure the player had completed his degree and I thought it might have been Brent Fullwood. I think this happened about the same time the Eric Ramsey stuff was going on.

Also, IIRC, Fulwood was interviewed only once during his time with the Pack, and it was so bad no one could understand what he said, and I don't think he was ever interviewed again. IMMSMC.

THE JAMES BROOKS Illiteracy Scandal - Brief Article

Interesting article on James Brooks in the above link. Here is an excerpt from it:

The "problem" he refers to was the revelation that occurred during a hearing in Judge Steve Martin's Hamilton County, Ohio, courtroom last month regarding delinquent child support payments in excess of $110,000. James Brooks could not read the court documents; this after graduating from Warner Robins High School in Georgia in 1977 and after spending at least four years at Auburn University in Alabama.
When asked by the judge how he graduated from Auburn, Brooks said, "I didn't have to go to class."
