Does anyone work a side job or have turned a hobby into extra income?

Just curious. I started umpiring this fall after coaching my boys for years in baseball. It's some extra money. I was wanting to start up an e-business as well. Something sports related. Has anyone done this and what has your experience been?

I took a house that had been in my head for years and finally designed it in a 3d program. i put it on linked-in and facebook and got some job offers to do others. it worked for awhile but right now it is dead.

my mom took a sewing and monogramming for family and turned it into a side business. it has worked out pretty well for her. she has been trying to make me a Alabama quilt (with all the championship years on it) but keeps selling it. She started this in 2009 and i still don't have mine.

Yes. I run a side business that makes Cajun Pickles and BBQ Sauce. It doesn't make enough to quit my day job but it is fun and something my wife and I really enjoy. I'm hoping to one day hang up my "Accounting Manager Cleats" and do it full time. But until then we'll keep trying and have fun doing it.

I'm still doing a little bit of networking/IT consulting on the side. However, it's kind of backwards in how it came about. :)

I sort of switched "careers" by going from the hardware/networking side of IT to software development as my full-time job a few years ago. However, I have a few businesses in the area that won't let me quit. I can usually only do on-site calls after business hours, I travel -and so am unavailable - on average a week out of each month or so for my full-time job, and I've raised my prices three times. They just won't stop calling. :) I've unloaded a couple of them off during the past year but there's maybe 5 or 6 that either aren't willing to look for or can't find someone else in the area that they're confident will do a good job for them.

It's a little bit of extra income but, to be honest, the extra self-employment taxes combined with the extra time requirements make it to where it's not really worth it. I guess I'm kind of afraid to give it up cold-turkey, though, in case I need to fall back on it at some point.

I love both things you just spoke of. How do I find the ones you make?

I run a golf website on the side. Doesn't make a ton, but helps enough that the wife can stay home.

It's been fun because I enjoy golf. I think the key is that it needs to be something you enjoy and are passionate about. Otherwise, it's just a second j-o-b.

I had a website, somewhat inspired by Tidefans, www.katysports.net, but I let it go because I couldn't maintain it by myself, work a full-time job and raise kids. My goal was to sell advertising but more importantly, be an information source for Katy area sports from youth sports all the way through high school with schedules, rosters, etc for all the sports (HS and JH).

If I win th powerball tonight, I'll start running it again.

I tutor (primarily statistics) and just began an educational consulting business on the side. My consulting focuses on helping families with planning for college in all respects - where to attend, what to study, what classes to take in HS to prepare, ACT prep, financial planning for college, help with the FAFSA and other financial aid, etc. After just a few months, I could probably do this full-time, but I love my "real" job.

I have been "lucky" in that both of the above had virtually no start up costs. For the consulting business, I talked to as many people as I could about different aspects of the business. This advice is what has made this business so great for me. I talked to small business owners, parents who recently sent their kids to college, and personnel from a few local colleges.

Oh, and I charge $45/hour tutoring math, and have to turn people away in the second part of each semester. Easy money for a part-time gig.

You callin' me fat?
Better not be, cause you know that's not true. I eat carrots like all the time. They are awesome with bacon cheddar ranch sauce.
You probably cover all that in your homeschool health class. a

My wife recently started transforming her furniture design and refinishing hobby into a consignment business. It's been generally word of mouth along the northwest florida coast so far, but she's secured saltwaterchickdesigns.com for upload of some of her work in order to launch an e-business and perhaps expand. She's saved our bacon with her furniture work over the past 6 months while I've been out of work since military retirement.

She also runs Saltwater Chick Resale on facebook, a free "online yard-sale like" group where people can hook-up with other buyers and sellers to sell or purchase second-hand merchandise. Sort of a cross between ebay and craig's list but on a local/regional level. My wife and her partner run two "meets" each week where all the folks who've agreed on deals through the site meet up to close their transactions and socialize. The resale site has grown like wildfire over the past several months, and it is becoming apparent that facebook is not the best vehicle for it. Kim's thinking about moving it to its own domain, and figuring out a way to actually earn a profit from it.

I can envision a profitable future for one or both of these endeavors.

I started buying used cars about 15 years ago. Keeping them all running has made a fair amount of $$ for my mechanic.

Wait...that's probably not where the question was going...;)

Seriously, interesting thread. May motivate me to get some of my ideas out of idea stage & into implementation.
