Eli Gold's Top 5 Calls

Some great memories there for sure! Fortunate to have watched them all, either in person or on TV. It would be fascinating I think, particularly for us older fans, if you could get the same from John Forney. But alas...

I'm surprised that 1989 Penn St is on the list?? I mean yeah it was a great play when it happened but ultimately it had no effect on the success of the season.

We ended up losing to AU which caused a 3-Way Tie with UT for the SEC Championship and then got beat by Miami in the Sugar Bowl. The ending of that season soured everything before it for me.

How is Langham's Pick 6 in the 1992 SECCG not better and more important?....Maybe Teague's Pick 6 or The Strip against Miami?? Trent's Dagger run against LSU for the NC? AJ to Coop in the 2012 SECCG?? Drake's KR TD against Clemson?? etc etc etc.

I'm just sayin'...... there are way better and more important plays than an ultimately meaningless regular season blocked punt against PSU.

I wondered the same thing. There is probably some reason that resonates with Eli on a personal level that makes that game, or that call, so important to him.

Eli says in he videos that these are play calls that he remembers as special - he's not choosing plays for their significance overall, but rather plays that resonate with him, ones he's very proud of calling.

I was at Bama for the 89 Penn State blocked FG. In Paty Hall. First semester. Still didn’t really know anybody all that well. Was watching the game in my room with my roommate. The entire dorm exploded when Bama blocked it. Everyone ran in to the halls, high-fiving and even hugging. We eventually made it into the front yard and continued the celebration.

That game, that moment, is definitely one that I won’t forget. I guess it was at the tail end of a series of games against PSU on one another’s campuses. Good series. Good tradition. Good game. Great finish.

The 1989 Penn State finish has always been one of my top favorites, I guess because I live in Penn State country. A chip shot FG so everyone knew it wasn't going to be wide right or wide left, it had to be blocked. My buddy, who graduated from PSU was at the game and was in disbelief when it happened. Needless to say Happy Valley turned pretty sad that day.

I remember each one of those! Like so many more great Bama moments, I almost get misty eyed with each one! I was at the Kenyon Drake dagger in the LSU heart game. The Rocky Block was a moment I remember especially. I was watching it with my oldest daughter at my mother in law's house. I remember being on my feet in the kitchen half not wanting to watch, but watching anyway! I remember my mother in law laughing at how crazy we went after the block! I think that was the last time I watched a game at her house while she was alive. I now watch pretty much every game there now since we bought her house a few years ago. My reaction at the end of this year's championship game would have probably put her into cardiac arrest!!

I remember years ago - and I'm talking about maybe 1990 or so - I had a cassette tape of "Classic" radio calls - I think it was called "Whuppins by the Crimson Tide" or something close to it. There were classic calls from Forney, Paul Kennedy, and Eli - I'm pretty sure the "Goal line stand" call was on there - I know "The Kick" was, as well as several other great moments - Run in the mud, the sack against Notre Dame, and such.

I don't know if that's still available. I'd buy one - I played that tape so much I wore it out!!! :) - here's one that was on ebay and came up in an internet search:

I remember that one well because I was a student at Troy State at the time. We had a game that evening that started right as the Alabama game was ending. A friend talked my into going to the TSU game, and we were listening to Eli while waiting on our game there to start. There was a minor roar through the crowd as Bama fans heard how that one panned out. I couldn't tell you how the Trojans played that day (though their band always sounded fantastic), but I won't forget the Eli call. I really wish I could get his radio broadcast and have it sync with the game as I am watching. I would enjoy that so much more than any of the TV options.

Many of us have that issue, yet folks still post Facebook and Twitter links. So we get to see a thread and not enjoy the actual content.
If techster79 meant that if you are at work and your employer blocks Facebook then you cannot view it that certainly is not the case with me. I'm on my home PC and I still cannot view it. I even tried logging into my Facebook account but still without success. Oh well, a few of the videos I can find via a You Tube search to watch.
