That's both encouraging and discouraging information.

Encouraging because it sounds like the players who chose to play in this game are focused.

Discouraging because I believe that the current mindset of too many young players makes them "energy vampires" and the problem isn't going to get better any time soon, if ever.

Well, one thing is for certain. There will be a champion every year, so the team that deals with this most successfully will have an advantage over those who do not deal with it.

Saban referred to the players entering the transfer portal -- including starting left guard Javion Cohen, four backup offensive linemen and four wide receivers -- as having “opted out” of the Sugar Bowl.

“I think everybody knows the guys that opted out for whatever reasons,” he said.

This is the second time this year Saban has referred to “energy vampires.” In August, he told ESPN he believed players had bought in ahead of this season.

“We don’t have a lot of what I call energy vampires, guys that take all your time because they’re not doing what they’re supposed to do,” Saban said at the time.

Saban also said during spring practice began in April that the 2022 team, at the time, did not have “any complainers” on it.
This is what drives me crazy the most. He kept saying in Spring, Summer and before season that everyone has bought in, and then he makes a comment after season is over.

That tells me something changed during the season. I wonder if it was after Tennessee game, that changed things...

I thought we had ‘ no knuckleheads on this team’ . This team was different from last years team because everyone bought in. Something isn’t adding up. So now let’s blame the players that aren’t here? I understand some of these guys may become a distraction late in the year if they aren’t playing, but this team this year was suppose to be different. Or, maybe it wasn’t. Clearly, it wasn’t. Just not as vocal in social media like Hall/ Billingsley.

I wish he would get rid of the "sanity vampire" aka Pete Gol*ing. He is enough to drive any Bama fan crazy!

Is this a convenient way of making excuses for a team in which suspect coaching didn’t allow players to maximize the “buying in” portion of team chemistry?

Sure, maybe CNS missed on reading the unity aspect of this team. But isn’t it easier cast aspersions on those leaving than to have his coaches look in the mirror and critically analyze what they did/didn’t do?

I guess that question will get answered in the days and weeks following our bowl game.

Thank you. I think you summed up most my post following yours better than I did.

I don't know if Saban misread the team chemistry... It's possible to do what some would call... "Fake it until you make it."

Agreed. I'm cautiously optimistic that Saban will find a way to deal with this issue, but the clock is ticking due to his age.

I don't think the game has passed him by, and I don't think it ever will.

But I do have concerns that the relating to kids may become more and more a younger man's game from a coaching standpoint.

Excellent thread.

To lump all the players under the same insulting tagline seems a bit glib and self-serving, particularly since one of the departing players was a multi-year starter dealing with emotional problems. It also belies CNS's earlier comment that the coaching staff needs to develop better relationships with the players.

The times they are a-changin'. At this point, I'm tired of hearing the coach talk about it. I'd like him to fix it or accept it.

I completely agree with you! He said the same thing last season after the National Championship loss. Player development has been lacking particularly on the defensive side of the ball for several seasons. It's time to stop blaming the players and put the responsibility on the staff. Golding is the biggest "Energy Vampire" on the team.
