EPL 2023-2024 Discussion Thread

A lot of pundits had them pegged for another automatic promotion after this season. They've looked good so far.

I'm hoping so.

One of the things I regret when I lived in England was never going to a (then) League Division One soccer game. If they are promoted, I'm going to have to go, if I have to swim the damn ocean and sell my body parts for a ticket.

I have been on their pitch at Portman Road, but granted, that was 45 years ago.

Better start saving now. Other than Leicester, they clearly look like the class of the league. They look like a lock for 2nd place and automatic promotion.

They're looking real good so far this year.
The turning point appears to be the new American ownership that bought them in the spring of 2021.
They're serious about winning.

There's a part of me that will always love what Leicester City did. My first year as a soccer fan, they absolutely imploded, winning only 5 games all year and getting relegated from First Division (1978). Their rise to the top several years ago was a sensational story.

Right now Luton is finding out how much different the top league is from the #2 league.

In the top flight, you have to bring your "A" game every single match to have any hope of snagging a point or three. It almost takes a superhuman effort to score a goal.

True, but a few yoyo seasons with the accompanying parachute payments can go a long way toward building a solid squad, if done correctly.

Leicester is starting to run away with the Championship. They're as close to a lock for promotion as anyone I've ever seen.

With the 10-point reduction penalty, does anyone think Everton will stay up after this season? Also, what is your opinion on potential Man City penalties given what happened to Everton and the number of charges Man City face?

Slim to none. Not sure they would stay up w/out the penalty. I suspect MC and Chelsea are going to get hit as well.

Yes. Even though it was a 10 point deduction, they were 8 points better than Luton at the time, about 1/3 of the way through the season. I can easily see them making up the 5 point advantage Luton currently has over the last 25 games. I'd LOVE Luton to stay up, but I don't think they can hold off Everton, and I don't think they can move ahead of Bournemouth and/or Forest in the able.

As for Man City and Chelsea, they would HAVE to get AT LEAST the same 10 point deduction that Everton got. I'm not as well versed on Chelsea's FFP issues, but IF Man City are found to be guilty of all the violations they are alleged to have committed, it might be an automatic relegation as opposed to a points deduction, since they could probably receive a 50 point deduction and still stay up.

Glanced at the table, and didn't realize Everton has already been slapped( 10 points for 1 violation). They might be able to fight their way back up the table a little.
MC is being looked at for 115 violations and Chelsea is being looked at for multiple secret payments from the old regime. According to Soccer News, both could be hit with massive point deductions or even expulsion from the EPL. The article indicates that if that becomes a possibility, they will re ignite talks about a Super League.

One problem with relegation as a punishment is that it removes another deserving team from being promoted the following season because you know City will go straight back up.

Perhaps a better/more fair punishment would be a disqualification from European football for a few seasons.

Ipswich Town beat Watford today to move, however temporarily, into the lead of the English Champions League (2nd Division) by 2 points ahead of Leicester City (though to be fair, they've played one game more).

This is unreal.
