How will that work -- is Sumlin going to have to tell 9 kids they can't be signed and to look elsewhere? This late in the game, it looks like a really tough situation he has placed himself in.

Can you imagine the grief Alabama would have from the media if we had 34 kids committed?

Big deal, no one even notices when a Big 10 team signs 30 in a class.

You get 25 a year, but you can enroll players early and back-count.

The SEC made it an issue with the 25 signing limit. They had 28, which kind of made sense, but by dropping it to even with the scholarship limit they placed a premium on using them up.

So, you might be like why does A&M want to use up every single one they have available? The answer is simple, they can't sign 26 the following season! They only get to use 25 a year, and all they are doing is counting some for one year and some for the other. But, the rule says you only sign 25, not 25 academically qualify, or 25 don't sign an MLB contract. Each guy that doesn't make it on campus is like a lost scholarship, which wasn't as big a deal when the signing limit and scholarship limit wasn't identical. So, because these SEC teams can't save those spots for next year, which used to happen sometimes, it's use it or lose it now.

I've read elsewhere that there are a few known academic casualties too. They of course will not actually sign. They are just being allowed the glory of committing.

In Ole Miss' case, they just signed them and then let them go to community college. That's one thing that caused a lot of fuss about so called over-signing, which was kind of a joke since everyone knew what was going on. Now, if Texas A&M is doing it they just have to dial it back further, you can commit but you can't sign. Big deal either way, I've seen people talk about oversigning and blasting academics for being too low, and then we have these kids that can't start out at D1 because of academics and we don't even want to let them commit to a school.

All that tells me is that Sumlin is an SEC coach already. 25 will sign, some won't get in academically, grey shirts, early enrolling, etc. Some random Texas Tech fan will blog about it, no one will notice or care. Big boy programs do what they want. We should know.
