Re: "Todd's Toast of the Town"

FWIW, my recommendations for "local" flavor:

Thomas Rib Shack on 15th Street (west). Their ribs make Dreamlands seem like beef jerky.

The Oasis in Cottondale. Best greasy cheesburgers in town (and ice cold beer
This thread is making me hungry and thirsty!

I believe it's Ezell's Catfish Cabin... I've only been there once but I liked it a lot. My family took me there when I graduated in '98.

Re: "Todd's Taste of the Town"

I'm not sure but I don't think Ezell's exists as a stand alone restaurant anymore, I think it may only be in the Stadium now. I am not positive on that though. Also great call on Rama Jama's, that places slips my mind sometimes. Their milkshakes are excellent as is the breakfast and burgers.

Re: "Todd's Taste of the Town"

Man, when I was in school (late 80's), City Cafe was the deal!! I must've had lunch there at least 2-3 times/week. I remember the food as being very good, but things do change.

We also used to eat at a place called Mama Jewel's. I don't believe it's still open, but it was a meat & 3 place too. It was a touch more expensive than City Cafe, but I thought the food was excellent.

Man, those were the days.....
it was sad how much i ate at the city cafe in my final year in t-town. mama jewel's rocked as well. i also made it to some divy fried fish place on the west side of downtown called sweet taste for some of the best fried fish i have ever had.

Not to change the subject but has anyone ate at the stake place they featured during the TN game. That place looked good but I think it is a few unusual way to cook a steak.

Re: "Todd's Taste of the Town"

City Cafe holds great memories from my days at the Capstone, but aside from being cheap and plentiful, I don't remember the food as anything special.
You gotta know what to order..... For example, on Thursdays, order up 2 BLTs but have them use the fried green tomatoes instead of the red ones and Fridays, order up a bacon double cheeseburger and a side of the homemade banana pudding (recent special addition). Brings tears to a glass eye.

I'll always hold a special place in my heart for Tut's as it kept me fed my freshman year. You can't beat a slice of pizza, full plate of fries, and a drink for $5.
I think Tut's puts something addictive in their pizzas because those things are TOO good. It's like they put you into a trance or something and all you can think about is eating another slice. Boggle the mind.

Re: "Todd's Taste of the Town"

I usually think most of the places he goes to actually don't look that good, but I will say the steak place he went to in Knoxville looked pretty dang good to me. Anyone ever been there before?

I've never actually eaten there, but I lived in Knoxville with my parents for a year while my husband was in Iraq (so much orange, ALL THE TIME), and I passed that restaurant nearly every day. Any time that place is open, it is PACKED. I mean, that place is never empty if they are cookin' in the kitchen. I also heard from many locals that it is one of the better places to eat a steak in K-ville.

Re: "Todd's Taste of the Town"

Hopefully he will go to the new Houndstooth
Yeah, because the taste of Bud Light is so unique...

I vote for Nicks Original Filet House or Chuck's Fish downtown.

As for Ezell's, the one in Tuscaloosa has been closed for a while but the original at the Fish Camp is still open I believe. Last yeah they did Archibald's and Tailgating (on the quad). Buffalo Phil's has branched out to a few places but the original on the strip is still owned by Phillip Weaver (much like the rest of the strip). Desperado's has also made a name for itself with their signature martini's and Black Angus steaks.
