UGA QB Newman opts out over virus concerns

QB Jamie Newman, who transferred to Georgia from Wake Forest in January and was the Bulldogs' expected starter, has instead opted out of the 2020 season over coronavirus concerns and will focus on preparing for the NFL draft.

This one seems a little bit different to me.
He has not played a down for Georgia. I'd have less problems with Coach Smart telling him, "Good luck with your prep; you're not going to be doing it here."
Newman does not owe Georgia anything, but on the other hand, Georgia does not owe him anything either.

Any wagers on this becoming like the recruiting announcements. They will start bringing animals, cap switching, using phrases like "I'm taking my talents to...".

What's coming? Guys opting out? I don't think Newman is going to start a trend. I'm sure more will happen but it is not going to be a very large number IMO.

We'll see. My guess is these projected high picks are getting advice from outside sources and more than likely from people at some point in the business cycle connected to agents.

Hopefully the five or six 1st round guys on our team won't do it and don't think they will. The two LSU guys and now Newman who is not a 1st round talent IMO are the only high profile SEC guys I can recall. The Miami kid is another. You may be right but I think most will continue to play to create more value for themselves.

Kids don't ever want to feel like they're falling behind their competition. So the sales pitch to get someone to opt out really isn't that hard to come up with, IMO.

"Hey man, you've already got guys choosing to not play and train their bodies for the next level. They're going to save a lot of wear and tear while you get out there and run the risk of getting injured and banged up. You're risking a lot of money doing that."

Is it likely? Who knows in this crazy year of 2020? I can also see a big time player getting seriously hurt after week 2 and causing others big time players who chose to play to pull the plug. I don't think it's as as easy of a decision for the guys as we want to make it. Hopefully Bama won't lose any.

Last I heard he wasn't even cleared for contact yet.

UGA in real danger of going 1-3 to open. Only game I expect them to win handily is Arkansas.

I don't think It's for virus concern... He may as well have lost QB battle to JT Daniel.... So by opting out is easy for him.

This is surprising news. Wonder how Kirby took it. Is JT Daniels even cleared yet? I think he will be a good QB if he is healthy. Not great, but could be better than Fromm. At least he is not a true dual threat (I don't think). It is strange Newman waited this long to opt out.

I sure hope none of the Bama players opt out this late. There are several reasons players are opting out, and not all are Covid. If Saban can keep the team together like he has done so far, this could be a great year for BAMA to make the championship game (if there are no major injuries or Covid issues).

Are NFL agents somehow influencing some of these decisions, even though they are not supposed to talk to college players directly? I thought Newman had 2 or 3 years of eligibility remaining, which would have improved his draft stock.
