The 3-3-5 for most major programs has passed its time. Read Chris Brown’s analysis of it in Smart Football. It’s fairly easy to scheme for it especially running the football. Granted, though, our OL looked weak yesterday to say the least. So, I’m inclined to give him a break for that (somewhat). For me the next few weeks will be telling. The talent is there but will be coached up?
haven't we known this since the Joe Lee Dunn days?

All I saw was an uninspired team get owned by freeshoes. That falls on the coaches. Intensity is the name of the game and not sure this staff inspires that attitude. So, I am fine with the scheme but you really have to fire up the intensity week in and week out or games like yesterday are going to populate the schedule with losses all season long.

I think he needs to watch some of his old UW tape and remember that he's back in college, and he'll be fine.
I think the fear in this situation is the question of to what degree his success and DeBoer's success is owed to Penix? These guys were just 12-6 at Fresno St, so either way we're going to get a good look at what they look like without Penix.

Mind you, I wanted Grubb as the OC because this is DeBoer's guy, he got hired because of his success at Washington, but you want him to have as many of the weapons he had there as possible.

We'll see how it goes, but one thing I desperately want both he and DeBoer adjust to is the need to have a running game in the SEC. The tend to let the RB have the ball on less than 40% of the plays, I'm not sure that's sustainable long-term and they won't always have an early first round pick at QB to lean on.

Yep. We had some pretty impressive defensive performances last year with that same scheme.

I thought he started with some good calls but as we went away from the script it went to mud.

I don't feel as if he did enough to get Ty comfortable and in rhythm. Just felt like too often on 2nd and long the expectation from Grubb was that Ty was going to be able to distribute it consistently 20 yards downfield. I thought some of the play calls in short yardage situations left a lot to be desired. 3rd and short/medium and we have just one route within like 15 yards.

I think the poor performance of the O line is mainly to blame because the run game was largely ineffective and it was evident that Grubb was relying on that to open up the pass game.

I think Alabama fans owe Sheridan an apology and a medal for enduring what he had to last year.

The play that for me changed the game was the 2nd or 3rd drive we were driving and had it 2nd and 3 and he calls a far side screen and it gets blown up. Next play false start then a sack. What was a 40 something yard FG attempt at worst became a 54 yard attempt that was short. Then the rest of the game with the exception of one drive we are running long developing pass plays.
I think that was a pivotal turn in the game.

I really wish CKD would have punted and tried to pin them deep. But when a team starts a drive near midfield, every play is available, unlike when you start inside your 20. It was much easier for them to start that TD drive from there and when they scored to tie it up, we got punched and didn't respond very well.

My only criticism of Grubb is that I thought he would have implemented a much quicker/shorter passing plan for TS in his first start.

Seemed we were running alot of deep routes with not short options too many times. But we also didn't adjust when FSU started getting pressure on Ty.

TS had a really good game when you consider how much pressure he had to endure in his first start.

A good way to keep the defense off the field is commit to the run, especially when you were picking up 4-plus YPC when doing so early. The worst thing a struggling defense is an offense that doesn’t sustain a drive.
You wonder if Grubb and Wommack has had a sit down together to discuss their strategies and how they can be cohesive and help each other as much as possible. Based on the way the game was called, it makes you wonder if they’ve been introduced.
This staff isn't capable of playing together look no further then the Georgia 2nd half. Deboer snapping ball with 20 seconds on the play clock and Womack sitting in the prevent. Numerous times when the d struggled to get off the field last year we would go 3 n out quickly and put them back on the field.

Yeah, I think it was 87 yards rushing. 59 of which came on the first drive. I think the staff panicked a little because the defense couldn’t get off the field.
Yes, our defense was supposed to be very good and take some pressure off of the offense. However, the defense was terrible, which put even more pressure on the offense, and they weren't up to the task. It was a very poor showing.
