Re: Scrimmage Stats

that is a great sign that no offensive stats are inflated like years past.. everyone thought that our offense was looking great when in fact it was a weak defense they were going against.. looks like the defense is much improved.. great sign imo

Re: Scrimmage Stats

Where do we have J. Griffin lined up right now? I hoped with his size/speed we would see him at RB. But 11 rush for 11 yds sounds like he is playing FB.

Re: Scrimmage Stats

I think the is a good sign of our defense getting back up to par......just like the olden days.

I don't think he's at fullback, that's way too many carries to be there. I've never heard of a coach calling 11 fullback dives in a scrimmage, unless they were running the option.

I imagine that they were working Griffin a lot as a tailback in short-yardage situations. Hence the relatively high number of carries, but the low yard per carry average.

Re: Scrimmage Stats

I would never gauge the success of a season on spring scrimmage stats. Best stat is no new injuries.

I think it's a typo. If you'll notice the players are listed according to number of carries in decending order. I would bet he had 1 carry for 11 yards.

what year did we have a weak defense of late besides 2007? 2006 the D was ranked 23, othwerwise it was a top 10 defense under CJk,IN 2004 AND 2005 ITWAS RANKED #1 OR #2. it was the offense that was weak under Shula!
spring to me is a time to evaluate individuals, not units

Re: Scrimmage Stats

Griffin did have 11 carries. At one point in the scrimmage, the offense was getting beaten so bad that the Offensive coaches challenged the OL by running it up the gut several times in a row. Griffin got all those carries.

Re: Scrimmage Stats

I wonder why Smith didn't punt any.

Me made a 20 yard FG and missed a 27 yarder. Welcome to college football, freshman.

Saban on scrimmage - http://alabama.scout.com/2/741778.html

“The reason you have a first scrimmage is to find out where you are,” Alabama Coach Nick Saban said following the Crimson Tide’s two-hour workout. “One thing you find is that things happen not so much because of what the other guy did, but because of what you didn’t do.”

Re: Scrimmage Stats

It would be nice to know who caught the other 12 passes ......

Re: Scrimmage Stats

I imagine the other completions were to RBs.

The no punts for Corey Smith also caught my eye. I was hoping he'd win (or at least provide some serious competition for) the #1 punting spot.

They've been running Griffin a lot when we go to the one-back look.

Re: Scrimmage Stats

Is Thomas Durrah a walk on? I'm not familer with his name.

Yes, Darrah is a walk-on. But he's a little better than what you typically get, quality-wise, from walk-ons.

Oh really?

I hope that's true. I've often that we'd utilize Griffin in that manner for some time now. We just don't use the fullback very much, and I had / have a hard time believing we would let a player with that much talent sit on the sideline. Hopefully he can fill a role for us very similar role for us that Jacob Hester did for LSU. A kid who can be a consistent, tough-nosed runner who can get the hard yards between the tackles, protect the football, and be used in short-yardage situations.

That surprised me too. I don't know who Heath Thomas is, but he did about as well as Fitzgerald did.

As for Smith though, he's not going to legitimately challenge for place-kicker this year. Tiffin has that locked up, barring injury, and he'll have to get playing time either as a punter or on kick-offs.

I would never gauge the success of a season on spring scrimmage stats. Best stat is no new injuries.

True, but we didn't exactly succeed on the latter today either. Motley and Sikes are probably out for the rest of Spring with hand and elbow injuries, respectively.

Re: Scrimmage Stats

This is speculative because I wasn't there yesterday, but;

I always hated to hear "run it again until you get it right" in practice. Defense can hear him when he says "run it again", and after the second or third time in a row you can't really run it better, only try to give more effort. After about five in a row running the same play the defense catches on (if they didn't understand the coach yelling "run it again" and cussing at the offense in the first place) and after about 7 times in a row your lungs and sides are hurting so bad you can't catch your breath. If they ran that thing 11 times in a row right up the middle that was a straight gut check. The fact that he had 11 yards in 11 carries indicates a clear win... but then the coaches probably weren't cussing at the defense.
