Freshmen to Start in 2007

McClain & Chapman might . Realistically , none . JOMO .:cool2:

I think McClain has a decent chance of getting on the field given our lack of depth at LB. Most people thought he was physically ready last year. So I'll give him my vote. One of the DL's has a chance also (Murphy, Davis if they can qualify)

None will start. But let's take care of business, score, put the other team's offense on lockup and then run in the rookies to get the PT they'll need. We haven't had the luxury of doing that lately. It's time to bring it back.

:biga2:

I think from what I've heard in the spring, that K Jackson could get significant PT.IMO,sa of the rest no doubt Mcclain will get a shot, along with some new DT recruits as in A Mc,and J Chapman.

Marquis Maze possibly? Although, I heard that there were some concerns over his size.

Josh Chapman DT 6-1 300 Hoover, Ala. (Hoover HS)could see PT
Patrick Crump OL 6-3 285 Hoover, Ala. (Hoover HS)likely greyshirt
Luther Davis DE 6-3 280 West Monroe, La. (West Monroe HS)could play if he gets eligible- very close
Jeremy Elder DE 6-3 280 College Park, Ga. (North Clayton HS)could play if he gets eligible- close
Nick Fanuzzi QB 6-3 210 San Antonio, Texas (Churchill HS)redshirt
Tarence Farmer DB 6-0 195 Houston, Texas (St. Pius X HS)need some depth at safety, but hopefully can redshirt
Nick Gentry DT 6-1 270 Prattville, Ala. (Prattville HS)depends on where they want to play him. LB/DE could play. DT needs RS to bulk up
Brandon Gibson WR 6-1 190 Mobile, Ala. (UMS Wright HS)could see some reps, hopefully can RS
Demetrius Goode RB 5-10 200 LaGrange, Ga. (Troup HS/Hargrave Military Academy) unless he jumps up to 3rd string or above, RS
Jeramie Griffin FB 6-0 225 Batesville, Miss. (South Panola HS)if he qualifies, he plays
Darius Hanks WR 6-0 190 Norcross, Ga. (Norcross HS) still needs to qualify, but I see RS
Jennings Hester LB 6-3 230 Atlanta, Ga. (The Marist School) lack of depth could mean he plays
*Kareem Jackson DB 5-11 185 Fork Union, Va. (Fork Union Military Academy)plays a lot
Chris Lett DB 6-2 200 Pensacola, Fla. (Pensacola HS)so dynamic in the secondary that he could earn PT
Marquis Maze ATH 5-8 170 Tarrant, Ala. (Tarrant HS)needs weight, but he is explosive.
Rolando McClain LB 6-4 245 Decatur, Ala. (Decatur HS)plays a lot
Alfred McCullough DT 6-3 300 Athens, Ala. (Athens HS)if he's in shape, he plays
Kerry Murphy DT 6-5 320 Hoover, Ala. (Hoover HS)if he's in shape and qualified, he plays
Michael Ricks DB 6-2 185 Courtland, Ala. (R.A. Hubbard HS/NE Mississippi CC)if he qualifies, he sees a lot of PT
*Jamar Taylor RB 5-10 200 Lakeland, Fla. (Lakeland HS)looked very impressive, but I hope we can shirt him
Chris Underwood TE 6-4 225 Birmingham, Ala. (Vestavia Hills HS)RS to bulk up
William Vlachos OL 6-1 295 Birmingham, Ala. (Mountain Brook HS)likely greyshirt
Alex Watkins LB 6-3 225 Brownsville, Tenn. (Haywood HS)could play at Sam or Jack
Chavis Williams LB 6-4 220 Dora, Ala. (Dora HS)could play at Sam or Jack

There are a lot of guys who could earn PT because of lack of depth at DL and LB. Remember, we actually "added" a LB spot to an already depleted LB depth chart with CNS defense.

Showing up in-shape and learning the D will be huge for several of these guys.

Griffin is the one I am waiting to see....
No returners at FB and Griffin is amazing. He was one of the three finalist for Mississippi's Mr. Football. I expect the biggest surprise from him.... But like already stated.... if he qualifies.

No starters, very little PT at all.

I would like to know how you envision the second part of your statement being possible? Even in a perfect world (which we certainly don't live in) I would have a hard time seeing a scenario where some of these freshman wouldn't play, and in our case play significant minutes.

Good info, RTO. I'd hope that we don't play that many, so that these guys can add some strength and understand the playbook more. I think a lot will see significant PT on the DL and LB as well. We have no depth there at all. Hopefully the signees see the lack of depth and that gets them extra motivated and are becoming gym rats.

Depth or No depth, McClain is one of the best, if not the best, freshman linebackers in the country. at 6'4 240 lbs hes got the size. He's smart, he's fast. I see him starting within the first 5 games. He's freshman All-SEC, Freshman All-America material, just like Prince Hall.

I think some of you saying none will play or none will start are in for a surprise.

Off the top of my head...Kareem Jackson will at worst be the nickelback. He might start at corner. It's going to depend on competition between him and Mitchell through the first few days of fall camp.

Rolando McClain, I look to start, either ahead of Saunders or perhaps move inside and go ahead of Mustin.

If Griffin qualifies, it will be a tossup between him and Huber for the fullback job. I think Goode may find a way onto the field at RB. We've got a lot of bodies at RB but listening to the coaches, I don't think they're completely enthralled with many of the holdovers.

Jamar Taylor will obviously play, given where he was on the depth chart at A-Day.

The coaches have made it little secret we need immediate DL help, so whichever big guys qualify will have a great chance at early PT.

That explains alot. It seemed strange that we're going after 2-3 in next years class after signing at least 2 this past Feb along with what we already have. The crowded backfield may not be as crowded I would have thought.

I got a question for you Jess. Does the coaching staff give the playbooks to the recruits prior to them getting on campus or if they enroll early, this Summer? I know that the coaching staff can not do any outright coaching per NCAA rules, but that shouldn't stop them from at least giving the incomers something to look at so they can be somewhat prepped come Fall. Also, I wonder how many guys are actually going to enroll early this Summer? I would imagine that all those that are cleared are probably urged to enroll so they can get started in the offseason program.
