Follow the money. And good old Pell City is still stuck with 10 down and 1.5 up. Sucks. We use tons of data for what we do and the internet just sucks here.
I'm at 90 down and 15 up, just with Comcast's top tier. I love the competition here. About a month or so ago, Comcast gave notice that they were building a fiber net (yeah, the people where a standard service call online takes about an hour). AT&T had already given notice. I told Liz "something's up." Now I know...And good old Pell City is still stuck with 10 down and 1.5 up. Sucks. We use tons of data for what we do and the internet just sucks here.
FYI Comcast's fiber offer in Atlanta $300 a month and $1000 install fee, didn't even look at the speedsI'm at 90 down and 15 up, just with Comcast's top tier. I love the competition here. I probably won't either. I don't need that kind of speed. A while back, Comcast offered me an extra box - totally free and supposed to be "more advanced." Well, I bit and ordered it. When it arrived, it had exactly the same size hard drive - 500 GBs as my old box. I can only store a few games at that and have to prune them, if I'm going to do it through the box. I have five terabytes on my machine. Worse, the service tech who was pushing them said I could export to the cloud. That would have been neat, but it wasn't so. You could only back up to the cloud. Big deal. I sent it back, after noting they were going to charge two extra charges, totaling $15 monthly for the privilege of owning it. After sending it back, I got a letter from them, saying they'd noticed they hadn't been charging me enough (the box). Pack of slime...FYI Comcast's fiber offer in Atlanta $300 a month and $1000 install fee, didn't even look at the speeds
We can thank the worst company in the world for this called Centurylink . If I'm not mistaken PC is in their area. And good old Pell City is still stuck with 10 down and 1.5 up. Sucks. We use tons of data for what we do and the internet just sucks here.
I know most will not actually read the article, but this is not really Google's network. This net will be built by Huntsville Utilities and owned by them and hence by the city. If the partnership with google doesn't work out - or the costs get extreme, as you've said - they can yank the franchise and rent the net to someone else...FYI Comcast's fiber offer in Atlanta $300 a month and $1000 install fee, didn't even look at the speeds
Pell City is some sort of designated rural phone zone and the only provider for phone is Centurytel and the only internet is Centurytel and a local company. It has to be changed at the Public Service Commission level. I know of people that are working towards that end.Follow the money.
Heck, they used to be headquartered here. I grew up in Hamilton which is also a Centurytel area. Out of the frying pan....We can thank the worst company in the world for this called Centurylink . If I'm not mistaken PC is in their area.

I'm very jealous. We use lots of 50mb-100mb files and also use dropbox alot. We're constantly pushing and pulling big files.I'm at 90 down and 15 up, just with Comcast's top tier. I'm very interested in pricing. I expect it to be nothing at all like the piracy by Comcast cited by Jon. One thing to remember is that HU was building the network already, in any event. So, we were all paying for the hardware, except for connecting, through our rates. It follows that there will be downward pressure by the City. Google can be a rapacious company, but they're much more sophisticated about it than Comcast...In other cities where Google has already launched fiber, for $70/month you get up to 1 Gigabit download/upload. That's only $5 more then I'm paying now for 60 Mbps down / 6 up. Looks like I need to find a job in Huntsville.
OT, but did you see where the teacher got his Dropbox hacked? He uploaded an extensive video clip of himself and another man in a sexual act and put it in Dropbox. A clever little hacker at his high school hacked into it and posted the clip on the school network. Sounds like FL, but I believe it was ARK...I'm very jealous. I didn't. That's good info. We don't keep any type of financial info there, but we do have design stuff.OT, but did you see where the teacher got his Dropbox hacked? from what I see on facebook and r/atlanta it looks like they are starting in the old fourth ward down to Grant park and then rolling West as well as hitting apartments around town in big chunks. Makes me want to move Souththe tri-cities area (east point, hapeville and college park) plus several other parts of the metro area are slated to get google fiber, but i haven't heard a timeline since last year's announcement. i am ready because we have to use comcast for both business and home and i cannot stand using them.
It's not the first time it's happened. I stopped using it for client's docs. I'm not sure the design data would matter, unless it's confidential...I didn't. That's good info. We don't keep any type of financial info there, but we do have design stuff.
