Grad transfer: Bowling Green WR Gehrig Dieter headed to Bama

Well, I saw a clip demonstrating how just about anyone can make impressive one handed catches with the gloves currently in use. Of course the incredibly athletic one handed catches are something only some people are capable of. I would add though that it's a lot less risky to attempt a one handed catch now than previously, because of the gloves. Twisting to barely get two hands on the ball might be worse than just fully extending to get one hand solidly on the ball with the way gloves are now.

Anyway, I think Dieter is a fantastic addition. The position might seem loaded, but Saban said he didn't get as many WRs as he wanted in the class so this fills that void right away. Additionally, Alabama had 3 injured receivers that never really were able to contribute last year. It's hard to be healthy at the position, Alabama lost guys important to the passing game in 2014 as well, and Cooper arguably saved the season his freshman year after injuries at the position. So, I'd like to think everyone is healthy and the position is loaded, but with Black transferring and Mullaney graduating, it's great to have someone coming in that should be a major contributor.

Also, did anyone see the quote from his dad? He sounded really excited his son was going to Alabama.

I dunno. Lester Hayes could catch a ball with his elbows.

Funny you found a picture of Lester Hayes with his fingers jammed in a jar of stickem

I wonder how long it will be until the gloves are regulated out of the game?

According to Ken Stabler; Fred Biletnikoff would go through 2-3 spray cans of Stickem every game in addition to 5 packs of Wrigley's gum. Made him super hyper.

Sounds like a great addition. Wonder what Saban is looking for at the RB position.

Bowling Green is my home town. I was at this game and saw both catches live. I wish I'd known he was coming to Bama for this upcoming season. I'm very excited about this.

Great addition, especially since we needed depth (not that he'll just be depth). Gotta like the starters we have, but we start getting into unknowns very quickly at the position.

he made some amazing catches last year

Yes, he looks NFL caliber to me. I like this trend of picking up proven guys that want to showcase on the national stage their last year, it's been a success so far.

From a foxsports article.
In 2015, the Tide brought on another similarly-sized grad transfer in former Oregon State wideout Richard Mullaney, who caught 38 passes and had five TDs for Alabama. Mullaney, Dieter said, has been a big help in the recruiting process.

“He’s had nothing but positive things to say about it,” said Dieter, who runs in the mid 4.5s and has vertical jumped 34 inches. “He said once he got there, he fell in love with the place. A big thing for him, he said, is their receiver room is a very tight-knit group. He said the strength program is unreal and that Coach (Lane) Kiffin is really receiver-friendly."

Yup..I've watched many many games when smaller schools like Bowling Green was playing & was saying too myself I would love to have a couple of their players at Bama..There's so many good football players throughout the US & a limited amount of spots at the bigger schools like Bama..It's awesome to see kids like Dieter giving a chance to showoff his talent at the highest level of play in college football & giving his best shot to move on to the NFL playing at Bama..

While I am happy he is coming to Bama and he will contribute, it is a big stretch to say he is NFL caliber. If he was he would not be coming to Bama now, but instead he would be entering the draft.

By that rationale Jonathan Allen is not NFL caliber. I think we know that is not the case. I've never seen this Dieter kid play, but to assume he can't play on the next level just because he didn't come out for the draft this year isn't factual reasoning. Here's hoping he plays well for us and ends up getting a chance to get paid in the league. Roll Tide!

Exactly....Oj Howard too. You can't just assume they aren't ready b/c they still want to play college ball.

This guy isn't some random scrub that happened to put up good numbers.

This article covers some of those aspects: http://www.hustlebelt.com/2014/7/7/5873803/gehrig-dieter-bolwing-green-football
"Dieter was a phenomenal talent during his high school career, and was named Indiana's 4A player of the year in 2011. He caught 81 passes for 2,171 yards (good for fourth highest in the nation) and 24 touchdowns in his senior season. He broke a national record for receiving yards in a game when he posted 437 at Washington High School. Dieter also holds Indiana state records for most receiving yards in a career (4,326), most receiving yards in a season (2,171), and career touchdowns with 49."

They ranked him as a top 50 player in the MAC before he caught a pass there. While was not a highly ranked recruit, he did have multiple D1 offers and I think it would be fair to compare him to someone like Joshua Jacobs or even Javier Arenas. Just because the recruiting services were not fawning over him doesn't mean he's not a legitimate talent. Remember, TO played for UTC, Jerry Rice played for Mississippi Valley State University. There's nothing that says NFL talent is determined by recruiting rankings or even where a college career begins.

The key here is this guy has performed where ever he has gone. He got it done in high school, with 2,000 yards in a season, he got it done in college, with 1,000 yards in a season. Now he has a chance to demonstrate he is an NFL talent by performing on the largest college stage at Alabama. I don't have a lot of doubts about him though, he's big, strong, and fast. Also, if people have doubts about his bulk, just look up some pictures. The guy is in good shape and his dad was a power lifter. While I doubt he has 1,000 yards at Alabama, I think he can be an improvement over Mullaney actually and that says a lot.

I've seen him catch one pass, so I think he's a first team AA and a top five draft pick.:)
