These are some photographs I snapped a few years ago at a graveyard at one of my favorite fishing holes. I guess I can say where, since the fish have stopped biting there anyway.

It's in Bayview, Alabama, if you know where that is. It's in Jefferson County around Pleasant Grove and Minor and Hueytown.

Don't remember the name on the tombstone, but I was doing some mapping work near a cemetery in Double Springs and again near Phil Campbell, and both times I saw tombstones with the Block "A" and the Elephant coming through.

Cool, RedStar.

It took me by surprise, in a good way, when I saw the ones I posted here. I don't know the people but, as I stood there, I said Roll Tide to the headstones.

Warning heeded. Feels like yesterday when I was in my 20's and I want to go back.
You can never go back. Jimmy's story is sad. He lost his job late in life, got a short try at another and then lost that. I'm sure it shortened his life. His wife is, for practical purposes, an invalid, with both Menieres Disease and Graves Disease...

I know exactly where that is. I went to minor christian school. I know of the second person, don't know how I know that name. But I used to fish bayview lake back in the day.
Great, rollntider, I thought someone on here may have knew about it.

You know, Archie Phillips had a place out there he bought just to use to fish it. He took Gene Stallings out there one time and they were catching fish right and left, as soon as the hook hit the water.

I saw it on one of Archie's Saturday morning fishing show years ago. Stalling's was laughing about how he couldn't hardly get his hook in the water, literally, before there was a fish on it.

Not too long after that, they ran Archie out of the community because he wouldn't stop stocking the lake with thousands of fish.

Anyway, it was still a fisherman's paradise with 5 and 7 pound bass being pretty routine until about 5 years ago. Then, a chemical spill at a plant somewhere in Birmingham got into a creek and it all flowed right into Bayview, it being a watershed.

The bream stopped biting, crappie are gone, the bass are very few and far between.

Ruined.

I don't know when I'll be back that way, but at the Brookwood Cemetary at Rocky Mount Primitive Baptist in Arab, there are more than a few Alabama headstones/shrines.

I don't know when the next Decoration Day is, and even if I did, I probably won't make it back there until T'giving. I'll take some pics then.

So you knew the man? It really is a small world.

Somehow it all seems more real now that someone can tell us a little about his life, even though it didn't end very well.

I had passed that graveyard, at Bayview, a hundred times on my way to Bayview Lake and had never stopped. One day I took my father along and he told me that his uncle used to live in the community and was buried there. While looking for his uncle's grave, I saw the headstones that we are discussing.

That would be great, bamanut. It is unique, I believe, to have a 'Bama logo on your headstone and fascinating.

I will be looking forward to the photos.
