I have eaten at many restaurants that were good , but only two deserve mention:

Taste of Texas in Houston is a place where you pick your steak from the window, tell how you want it seasoned and cooked. Great cinnamon coffee afterwards. Excellent service.

Dragos in New Orleans is known for the Char Broiled Oysters. Cant wait to have them again.

You have any ?

#1 Greebrier Barbeque (the old one) between Huntsville and Decatur. Best catfish and hushpuppies in the world

#2 Big Spring Cafe - Huntsville. Best slaw dogs, chili dogs and geasy hamburgers on the planet

As you can tell, fancy and expensive dont impress me much

In Alabama -

801 Franklin - Huntsville. A truly great restaurant with fantastic gourmet food and superb service. In Alabama, most restaurants are not known for the superior service from waitstaff that you experience in Miami, Tampa, Orlando, New Orleans, Dallas, etc. However, you get this at 801 Franklin and then some. One of the best wine lists that I have ever seen period. Do yourself a favor and try them out.

801 Franklin Catering, Restaurant

In Florida -

The Columbia - Ybor City (Tampa). Since 1905 this restaurant has been providing the best Spanish food in Florida. They are Florida's oldest Spanish restaurant and serve traditional Spanish cuisine (not Cuban, not Mexican) that always pleases. They now have other locations in several Florida cities, but the original in Ybor City (Tampa) is the best. Their Shrimp "Al Ajillo" (shrimp sautéed in virgin olive oil, fresh garlic and chili pepper) is to die for. Another favorite is their Mejiliones y Chorizo “Andres” - Named for Andres Sanchez who produced and provided our family with the best Chorizo, made in Ybor City (Tampa). Fresh Prince Edward Island mussels and sliced Chorizo, sauteéd and simmered with extra virgin olive oil, onions, celery, tomato, basil, spinach and garlic splashed with dry white wine and lemon. Man, I'm getting hungry typing this.:)

Diamond Kitchen, Hong Kong across the street from the Playboy Club, had my first Kobe beef steak there and it spoiled me.

I like the Chicago Chop House in Chicago better than Morten's or Ruth's Chris.

My wife's favorite restaurant is Tru in Chicago.

Babbo in NY.

Nobu for sushi in NY.

Le Colibri, Martinique Island food is so fresh you can watch the chicken lay the egg.

Papadeaux's near Beaumont Tx - a gluttony of seafood.

Sartin's at Sabine Pass destroyed by Hurricane.

I wish I had paid more attention to names in Istanbul but we ate some fantastic food there.

There are many places I can no longer remember the names of and are likely out of business or under new management. The place that had the great sub sandwiches in Wilmington Delaware, the railroad dining car turned into an Italian greasy spoon in Leominster Mass that had the best meatballs in the world and that Mexican restaurant my Mom, Dad and I went to in El Paso. Any of these could be my favorite. :)

Well, there are too many to list. My favorites of all, however, are as follows:

Brennan's in NOLA
Mother's in NOLA
The Shed BBQ right here in Jackson County, MS
California Dreamin' in Charleston, SC

I have simple tastes. Frou-frou food or atmosphere turns me off. Keep it simple.

I have dined at Nobu probably ten times, the last time almost two years ago back when Bush said things were booming ;) Every time save once, maybe twice, we were invited guests by my brother-in-law. He can afford to eat at Nobu :D It's been payback for me taking him fishing around Easter in my big boat. Boy is he going to be surprised when he finds that big boat has been sold :)

We usually all get what is called the Chef's menu. It's about $125-150 a person and you get a taste of a lot of dishes. Nobu is also known for an extensive Sake menu and $200 a bottle sake is kind of medium price but boy is there a difference in sake. I have tasted the real expensive sake and to be honest it almost made me want to pull out my check book and buy a bottle. :)

Yeah you can drop $300 or more for dinner for two but if you only do it as a rare treat and can afford it the experience is to die for. I'm just happy my wife's brother is usually picking up the check and leaving the tip. :)

Okay, I see we have 2 categories going on here - great restaurants and great diners/drive-ins/dives. ;) Now, I get it.:)

Here are my great d/d/d's (thank you, Guy):

Argiros - Spanish Fort, AL - We used to grab boiled crawfish and beer here in the early 90s. It may be gone now due to hurricanes.
Reececliff - Lakeland, FL - More of a diner in a restaurant. Great comfort food and Southern dishes - The meat loaf is to die for.
Conchy Joe's - Melbourne Beach ,FL - One of the best seafood dives I have ever experienced. Their fried conch and gator is my favorite.
The Sawmill - Brent, AL - As a student at U Montevallo, it was a staple. Many a night was spent here at 2:30AM eating giant western omelets and homemade biscuits with sweet tea served in a mason jar. Still there and still good.
The Galley Restaurant - Haleyville, AL - Fantastic home cooking, great sweet tea, and the best desserts in western Alabama.
