Greek life ruined at Alabama? I think not? Recognize greatness...

I'm extremely disappointed at yall's reaction to pledgeship ending at UA. Some of you seem so resentful, full of hatred, and just plain resentful towards greek life at UA, to the point that it sickens me. I am currently a senior majoring in Chemical and Biological Engineering at the University of Alabama. I am in a fraternity. After reading some of yall's posts, I am sickened. A lot of ya'll talk negatively about greek life at UA and it sickens me. I know I wasn't here during the mid 70's like a lot of yall disgruntled folks were, but give it a rest. Greek life at UA does a lot more good than it does bad imo. Sure, some things discourage the so called "gdi's" but give it a rest. Greek life at UA is a representation of a lot of good for UA imo. A lot of out of state students come to UA solely for greek life. You guys complain and moan about it, but its one of the many reasons that makes our school great. So many of you talk negatively about it, with biased "so-called facts" that is makes me so angry. Support your school. That means recognizing that UA is the largest greek school in the country. Even the mods here seem to be so biased. Like what is your deal with it? It's one of the reasons UA is one of the fastest growing public universities in the nation. I am proud to be a UA student, no matter the reasons of its high rankings. UA is one of the fastest growing schools in the USA, in term of research $ and enrollment. A large part of that is due to greek life. Don't diss it (so to say) but acknowledge its significant role in terms of growth and support it. Sorry for the rant, but I believe in what i work hard for.

No idea to what you're referring on negative comments or even the end of pledgeship, but I will say the negative reputation earned by "Greek life" among "gdi's" is deserved. My UA experience would have been so much better without having to tolerate the underhanded control of the Greek system over nearly all facets of student leadership, not to mention their disrespect towards fellow students and fans at football games.

I won't even get into the times a frat boy acted a fool in a bar and, when taking it outside, won't even look at you until a dozen of his buddies show up.

IMHO, please spare us the "greatness" you bring UA.

Exactly my thoughts. They were the baddest dudes in the bar when there were 12 or 14 of their little buddies with them. Get them alone, different story. Rarely did a week go by where one didn't hear about somebody being jumped by a pack of little frat boys.

Another sign of the apocalypse, I agree with Tider@GWLaw.
I guess the appearance of an expectation of privilege is a turn off. The weird behavior and the early abandonment of the stands during games to start the post-game festivities. During the early 1980s, the Crimson-White published the names of the Greek reps in "The Machine" (very creative name for a political machine), and the frat boys followed the CW delivery truck and promptly stole every copy of the CW that day. Shenanigans like that give the Greeks a bad name.
On the plus side, once they graduate and move on the life after college, I would bet they donate a good bit to the University or University athletics.

Y'all, we done bad. A frat boy, and a virtual New Boy to the board, is disappointed in us because we don't drink the Greek kool-aid (And I'm not talking about Ouzo, Everclear, and Hawaiian) like he does. Whatever shall we do?

You want to know one of the reasons the whole suspension of pledging happened? It's because of UA's growth. More and more students are coming in from out of state, which means the odds of them realizing some of the total and utter B.S. the Greek system at UA gets away with is out of line.

We could all have an ice cream cone (pick your favorite flavor):

So you're saying you're... sickened? Might want to try some vocabulary diversification. Here's some assistance...
Synonyms: disgust, nauseate, repel, revolt
Example: I am repelled by your arrogance.
I don't care what y'all do to your pledges. They paid for it.
I know I wasn't here during the mid 70's like a lot of yall disgruntled folks were, but give it a rest.
I matriculated at UA from 1989 to 1993, so I'm not as old and out of touch as some of these other dudes around here.
Greek life at UA does a lot more good than it does bad imo. Sure, some things discourage the so called "gdi's" but give it a rest.
I was a "gdi." I didn't come up with that moniker. I was advised of said fact by so called "frat boys."

See comment regarding arrogance.

I'll agree with that.

Really? Maybe I've forgotten, but I don't recall any significant impact the SGA had on my academic or social life at UA, other than reading countless stories about the Machine in the CW.

From my time as a proud GDI on the SGA Senate, the one significant thing the SGA can do in those regards is approve funding for student organizations.

Word.

About the only use I err had for fratboys was crashing their parties, drinking their booze, and banging their chicks. And the occasional recreational connection, if you know what I'm saying.

To the OP, I hope you feel better getting all that off your chest, but you're not going to use this forum to whine about the general public perception of the Greek system at Alabama. I'm pleased as punch you love it so and that it means that much to you, and I acknowledge the charitable work fraternities and sororities do in the community, but stereotypes are always grounded in truth no matter how much that truth may hurt to be confronted with.

In the big picture, most people couldn't care less that you were in a club (which is what it is...such an old-fashioned thing) in college. Your character is what people care about and too often you frat boys don't have enough character to be individuals and forego the group think that is inherent in the Greek system. It shows in your choices and your behavior in class, on campus, and in the local community. We've all made due note of it and the stereotype has held true for decades.

So, you'll find no sympathetic ears here. If you want to be respected, conduct yourself in a respectable manner. This post is not a good start.

I dunno. Maybe we're being a little hard on the man. Now that I think about it, I'm starting to recognize the greatness.

Tell us more. Let's start with which fraternity it is that you have pledged your allegiance to.
