Their AD is toast as well. The PTB wanted Steele and he bucked them. Au always has a guy on staff they want to be the HC. Tater Tot begot Oliver, Tubberville begot Chizik, Chizik begot Malzaaugn, and he begot Steele. Their big booster group have their hands in it always.
The question to ask is who hired Greene? That hire cost Steven Leath his job. The good ole boys lost control when Lowder was forced off the Board of Trustees.

True!

However, the working relationship between Harsin and the PTB is irreparably damaged...

Harsin will have to work hard to increase his value enough to get hired away from that cesspool of a program.

What if you found out that was the case before he left Boise-----------

Yep; they are shooting blanks at this point. Me thinks Russ Campbell has told them to write the full $18m check; or see us in court for a LOT more

That's exactly what I think is going on.

Auburn just needs to cut the check and be done with it at this point. Simply pay the man the buyout that you agreed to and move on.

There is no way this new “investigations” policy would hold up in court. Would the Fifth Amendment apply here? It seems as though this could eventually find its way to court and the 5A protects from self incrimination so I don’t see how a public institution can write “policy” to get around The USC. 🤷🏻‍♀️Constitutional Law is not my specialty, I specialize in juvenile matters, but this throws up all sorts of red flags.

Auburn really is an alternate universe, isn’t it?!

Even my relatives, the Auburn grads, are reveling in the way Harsin is handling this. It appears he has them by the proverbial “short hairs” at this point.

Apparently some of the good folks in Idaho weren’t pleased either:

From the article:
“Why? It boils down largely to former head coach Bryan Harsin. Don’t get me wrong, the current coaching staff is to blame for the game day hiccups and lack of attention to details, but the lack of talent at the two most important position groups on a team can be directly traced back to Harsin and his staff.
For years we have heard rumors that he is a jerk and difficult to work for. The revolving door of assistant coaches who have worked for him, the emails obtained through FOIA requests, and the comments from former coaches all confirm this point. The way he treats the media is confirmation enough.
When you can’t keep coaches on the staff because you are miserable to work under, you have to keep hiring new coaches. And when word gets out that you’re not a nice person, people don’t want to apply for your job opening. And when the applicant pool is shallow, you end up with guys like Brad Bedell, Winston Venable, and Eric Kiesau on staff.
And when you have coaches who can’t quite hack it on staff, your recruiting suffers, and your player development lacks. It has become clear the recruiting misses at positions of importance are directly related to the coaches on staff. This is how Boise State ended up with one of the worst performing offensive lines in the country, and certainly the worst ever at the school.”

They absolutely CANNOT keep Harsin at this point regardless of the truth.

Setting aside whatever his deficiencies are (on-field and off), you have a program unable to recruit that now has the spectre of "well, the coach that recruits me probably isn't going to be there anyway after next year" as well. 2022 has to be written off already, and they're risking the same for 23 and possibly 24 as well.

Btw, let me make a point here since there are always inevitable Gus early day comparisons that arise. These are ridiculous at a very important point: what is already on the team.

Whem Malzahn came back, he not only walked into many guys he had already coached for 1-2 years but:
- Auburn had won a 2010 championship
- their 2011 class right off the title ranked 5th in the nation
- their 2012 class ranked 12th, which was 4th in the SEC, and it's generally the "2nd year" after a title where you land more talent; they were obviously partly inhibited by both the drop AND Alabama winning it yet again

In other words, Gus inherited some players whose tendencies he knew and had previously coached on offense AND some reasonably good talent (ratings-wise) on the sidelines. And as I've noted before, I never thought 2012 Auburn was as bad as their horrific record any more than I thought the 2013 team was as good as theirs.
Simply look closely:

2009 - 5 one possession games, 2-3 (8-5)
2010 - 7 one possession games, 7 wins (14-0)
2011 - 3 one possession games, 3 wins (8-5)
2012 - 4 one possession games, 1-3 (3-9)
2013 - 7 one possession games, 6-1 (12-2)

In all honesty, if Auburn simply could have won all the close ones in 2012 like they did in the three years surrounding 2012 (all years Malzahn was on staff btw), it's at least somewhat debatable whether Chizik gets fired. They HAD to fire a 3-9 coach as he'd lost the team; if he'd been 6-6 and attained (and possibly won) a bowl game by not losing the team, perhaps he gets another year with the #5 recruiting class of 2011 a sophomores and who knows?

What did Harsin - just operating in a vacuum for argument's sake here - inherit?

2018 ranking - 12
2019 ranking - 11
2020 ranking - 7

Those numbers are actually a little better than I might have surmised, but throw in the fact it's not a team coming off a national title nor did he have a history with the players, and it doesn't help. And let's admit NIL makes things all the more specious.

It's not as though I'm an Auburn fan at all, but they're in so deep right now that there's no turning back. They'd do better to hire an interim for this year AND hire some sort of group that might know how to hire a quality head coach (go check with the folks who hire at Ohio State, they have a good track record).

I'm guessing that $18 million is what's standing in the way of that declaration.

If he wasn't doing anything wrong, then he wasn't doing anything wrong--and I can fully understand him wanting to have someone he already knows and trusts as an assistant, particularly when moving across the country.
Nothing legally or technically wrong here. I am surprised the PC police aren't all over this as discrimination against women as no one would raise an eyebrow if he had brought a MALE staffer from Boise with him. I do agree it turns out to be a social blunder in the hindsight of unpopular hire and losing season.

18 million is a lot cheaper than what a 4-8 season is going to cost them for years to come. If they really try to ride this out for another year then they are going to create a program that will be even further behind. He is going to be fired by December regardless. But if you wait then you are tanking the program.

Well, this is also true and supplements my point.

What a no win for the cult! Keeping Harsin would be FAR worse than firing him. This train is WAY too far down the tracks. Just like we were with Avery Johnson back in 2019.
