This may not mean much to the younger folks on the board, but to an old geezer like me it was a thrill...My son and I along with a friend were having lunch at Arby's in the hometown of Nico Johnson (Andalusia, Al) when the living legend Bart Starr stoped by on his way back (from FL) to B'ham...My Back was to the door and my friend (who is an old geezer too) said, "Is that Bart Starr?". I look back and said "no doubt about it"...At any rate, he took the time to chat for a few minutes. He offered us a autographed picture from his website bartstarrteam@aol.com ...He said he would be at the SJS game Saturday...After he left we asked the young folks behind the counter if they knew who just purchased lunch. They said no...I guess me and my old friend were the only ones that recgognized, remembered, and appreciated the great Alabama QB who put Green Bay on the map...Thanks Mr. Starr for your courtesy and friendly attitude. May the great tradition you are a part of continue at THE UNIVERSITY OF ALABAMA. ROLL TIDE ROLL!!

"...who put Green Bay on the map..."

Ummm, I afraid that the great Alabama receiver Don Hutson had taken care of that chore before Mr. Starr made it out of grade school....

Wow, FastChop! That's great. I'm sure it was good for Mr. Starr, too. Bet, with little advance notices, y'all could have gathered a bunch of Bama fans who remembered him at Alabama and GreenBay.

I bet many people on this board have a story about meeting Mr. Starr at some point in their every day dealings around Birmingham. For a two time super bowl MVP he has to be the most friendly, down-to-earth, and courteous person there is.

One quick story. One night in early 2001 my wife and I ran into him in a pizza place in Hoover. He took the time to speak with us and even apologized to us for interrupting our dinner! He also commented on the Bama baseball t shirt that I was wearing. Anyway, a few days later we went to Washington DC for a wedding. We were walking through the Smithsonian American History Museum and there was a picture of Bart Starr from his Packer days. I commented to my wife about how funny it was that we had just spoken to him not 4 four days previous and now we are looking at a photo of him as an integral part of our American history.

What a great story, does Mr. Starr live in B'ham or Green Bay. Thanks for sharing your story. RTR!!!!
Birmingham, Riverchase actually.

Met him a couple times myself. We did some contracting for Tameron Honda in Hoover, which he owns, or owned then, not sure if he still does or not. That was 15 years ago. He is truly a nice guy.

ROLL TIDE !! :BigA:

I met Bart Starr in the mens room of all places at the Winfrey Hotel. He and his wife stopped by our table and we talked a few minutes about Alabama football.
A truly fine gentleman.

That's pretty much how everyone describes him, but make no mistake, on the field he was a cold-bloodied assassin. In a clutch situation, I'd take him over any other QB and yes, that includes his contemporary John Unitas. I can't tell you how many times I've seen Starr on a 3rd and short throw the bomb and he rarely missed. Coach Lombardi (The Coach Bryant of pro football) said that Bart was the extension of himself on the field and that's good enough for me.

Fastchop, we met him for Homecoming 2007 at the Bryant Museum Circle of Champions breakfast. He was oh so very gracious with his time that morning. It was the highlight of the day.

You never know who you will see at the Bryant Museum.

Bart is one of the Class guys in sports. He is actually a distant relative and as a kid in Jackson MS I went to watch him Coach the Packers in the strike year against the Saints. My Grandfather arranged it and Bart met me and my family at the hotel and invited me to be in the locker room the next day before the game. It was very cool for a 5th grade boy to meet guys like Lynn Dickey, Eddie Lee Ivory and James Lofton and then go watch them play. After the trip we got a large box in the mail with a GB jersey and a nice letter and some other autographed items. I have seen him since at a couple of speaking engagements in Evansville IN and a few family funerals and I still thank him for that moment and he always says, at least we were able to win that game, as he chuckles about the Packers.

About five years ago, my company in Philadelphia had him come and give a motivational speech during lunch time. Afterwards, he signed autographs. He was a really nice guy and a class act. By the way, I was the only one who had him sign a Bama ball instead of a Packers stuff.

My dad's favorite player.
One of mine too. Met him when I was a young'un (upper elementary school). Very cool...And TMac, I'd take him over Johnny U too. Bart & co. are why I'm still a Packer fan, which of course doesn't register w/ the locals here who are pretty much convinced that the NFL began when Brettie-poo entered the league. They cannot comprehend being a Packer fan before #4 *and* after #4 has left the building.

Don't know if he still does, but Mr. Starr used to have a real estate business in a building loacated close to the Galleria. I met BS and shook his hand in a business transaction back in circa 1991 - 92 (NC year). My only brush and contact with BS but I'll always remember it. Stand-up guy and no non-sense.
