Greetings,

Like many of you, I have been coping with this period of decline and chaos. For comparison purposes (i.e., to feel better) I checked the last 10 years of U of Miami and Crimson Tide football. As most of you know, the Hurricanes were penalized some years ago and had to weather a similar loss of scholarships. You can see my data below. The numbers in parentheses reflect the number of scholarships lost due to NCAA sanctions, but my data do not take into account a cap in overall scholarships.

A few things stand out for me. The Hurricanes' worst season (1997) came during the third year of scholarship losses. This occurred despite the fact that Butch Davis (a good/excellent coach by any measure) had his system in place for two entire seasons before the 5-6 disaster.

Coach Shula took over a team in the third year of scholarship losses without spring practice. He "adopted" half of his coaching staff. In the 9 months leading up to Coach Shula's debut 2003 season, our team lost 2 coaches and their respective "systems". Our team "learned" the new system a few weeks before the start of the 2003 season. Too, it seems to me Miami was never afflicted with bad coaching. Ethics aside, Erickson and Davis were both good coaches and Coker was well respected when he took over. Coach Dubose may well have been over his head. But I digress.

Butch Davis improved to 8-3 in 1998. Mike Shula is 5-3 thus far in 2004 despite losing every starter in the offensive backfield. Butch Davis coached in the Big East. Mike Shula is coaching in the more competitive SEC. Yes, I want a "signature win". At the same time, I am impressed with how this team has played under the continuous adversity (scholarship losses, lack of depth, plus really bad luck with injuries). In perspective, I think what Coach Shula has done is pretty extraordinary.

But that's just my opinion.

1994 Erickson 10-2
1995 (18) Davis 8-3
1996 (12) Davis 9-3
1997 (14) Davis 5-6
1998 Davis 8-3
1999 Davis 9-4
2000 Davis 11-1
2001 Coker 12-0
2002 Coker 12-1
2003 Coker 11-2

1994 Stallings 12-1
1995 Stallings 9-3
1996 (12) Stallings 10-3
1997 Dubose 4-7
1998 Dubose 7-5
1999 Dubose 10-3
2000 Dubose 3-8
2001 (17) Franchione 7-5
2002 (18) Franchione 10-3
2003 (19) Shula 3-8
2004 Shula 5-3

A correction:

In the data I presented, the numbers in parentheses reflect the number of available scholarhips during the years of scholarship losses. In general, we ordinarily have 25 scholarships to award in a given year.

Good analysis, JD. A couple of other factors I will add while you are at it. Miami recruits in one of the two or three most fertile grounds for athletes in America. In addition, if memory serves some of those Miami losses in the down years were humiliating. Alabama lost 2 in overtime and has been in every game this year.

We should beat Mississippi State. We should have an even shot at LSU, if we sustain no other serious injuries. We should have an even shot at a bowl opponent if we beat Mississippi State. If you had told me the entire starting backfield would be watching from home by the Mississippi State game, I would have taken 6 wins without playing the season.

PS I have family in Denton. Like it there?

uaintn,

I agree with your additional points. Some of Miami's losses were very humiliating (40+ to 0 loss to Florida State I believe). And they do have access to an abundance of talent in Florida.

Personally, I like Shula's demeanor, too. Some would argue he is not motivating his players because he is not emotional on the sidelines. I prefer the cool-headed coach (e.g., Bellicheck for the Patriots). Frequent emotional displays will not necessarily motivate your players..quiet, determined, steady leadership will.

I like Denton. This is my 7th year teaching at UNT. At one time, I had family in Franklin. Most of my family live in Memphis where I grew up. At least I had the sense to head south to Tuscaloosa. I have hated losing to UT long before the rivalry heated up. How I've suffered these last 9 years! I'm looking forward to OUR next streak.

Another factor is that Miami's schedule is helped by playing in the Big Easyeast instead of the SEC. Our SOS is usually a lot tougher than theirs (though maybe not this year, since we have a very soft OOC lineup).

Good Analysis, JDTide.

It might just be your opinion, but when you support it as well as you did, who can argue?

Wait... I forgot where I was for a second. :(

Good post.
However, you may need to check the number of scholarships lost only by the Miami football program. They lost, I believe, a total of 31-35 scholarships but it was over 4 or 5 programs. Baseball, football, swimming, basketball and some women's sports (not sure about which ones). I may be mistaken but they ONLY lost maybe 12 football scholarships over 3 years, which equals 4 a year. This info used to be on the NCAA website.
This has always been a sore spot for me, Miami never lost the number of scholarships we have (not even close), matter of fact I don't believe any other school has.

Thanks Tallytide1. The figures I collected were from the NCAA database on major infractions. To be sure, I checked again and the scholarship reductions were for the football program only. There were, however, other penalties for tennis, etc.
