Bama is 4-13 since 2000 in games decided by 8 pts(one possession) or less.

The four wins?

2001: @Vanderbilt 12-9
Miss State 24-17
2002: MTSU 39-34
@Hawaii 21-16

Vandy was 2-9, Miss. State was 3-8, MTSU was 4-8, and Hawaii was a solid 9-3.

The 13 losses?

2000: @Aransas 21-28
UCF 38-40
@LSU 28-30
2001: UCLA 17-20
@South Carolina 36-37
@Ole Miss 24-27
2002: Georgia 25-27
2003: Oklahoma 13-20
Northern Ill. 16-19
Arkansas 31-34 2OT
Tennessee 43-51 5OT
@Auburn 23-28
@Hawaii 29-37

All of the above teams had winning records.

Which means..

We have ONE(1) win by 8 pts or less over a team with a winning record since 2000

Our last SEC win by 8 pts or less? vs. LSU in 1999, 23-17

Can you say...WE ARE WAAAAAAAAAY OVER DUE??
This trend MUST be turned around before we re-establish ourselves as a national power, hopefully beginning this week @rKansas.

nah...

2000-2004 = 4 seasons..not 2?

And, in that same time period, we have the most losses and the fewest wins in the SEC West in games decided by 8 pts. or less. The team with the next best record is Miss. State, who is 5-12 in such games. The best in that span is LSU, who is 9-2 in that span.

Yeah, you have to win the close games, and LSU has won 2 SEC champ's in that span, so obviously winning these types of games is extremely important

Sorry I mis-read not miscalulated, but since we've not had opportunity this year to win or lose an 8 or less point game let's consider it 3 seasons and I continue to agree, we do need to win close games and I might add, avoid the upset.

so that prompts a question and calls for an analysis...why?...
what's gone wrong for us to be losing so many close games...
if you look at the statistics, 6 of these games have come under the current staff...
under our current staff we have played a style of defense that loses you close games...
I have been convinced for years that the 'bend but don't break' defense only loses ball games...
this just adds to my belief...and my grief...
bend but don't break must go...
or else I'm afraid we'll still be near the bottom in losing close games four years from now...

What bend don't break defense? This year, I have seen Bama blitz and stunt more and disguise those looks far better than last year. The defense has made a vast improvement in styles, schemes, and the implementation of those.
