Is JPW going to be a Heisman candidate?

I do not like the play calling in scoring position. If you read my posts you know that. How about the positives though?

One thing worth mentioning is that Keith Brown is the 6th leading receiver in the NCAA. That's not too shabby.

The subject of conversation and the player I really love to watch play (and throw to Brown) is JPW. He's now the 16th rated QB and more importantly he's improved with every game. The schedule might get tougher but I think he'll be able to hang around the top 15.

The real question and I suppose what Alabama fans are looking forward to and have been for a while now is the 2007 season. Brown and Hall with be seniors, JPW will have a season under his belt. Hopefully Alabama is in the least coming off a solid season (I hope they can get at least 7 and tack on a bowl win). JPW will have big games and the focus could be on Alabama. I know it seems no 'Bama player can win the award but does he end up being a legitimate candidate? To me the only thing really that could prevent his candidacy next year is injuries or just not unleashing him.

Am I jumping the gun or does anyone else feel this way?

Leading his team to a big win vs. UF would definitely turn some heads. I think that he has as much opportunity as anyone else in football if his numbers stay on their current pace or improve. Having a good team around him and a potent running game helps his chances. It's only a matter of time before defenses start scheming to stop him and he will need some help, but if we have a big year next year he will get lots of attention.

I'm much more concerned with the little stuff, like winning championships, more than a BS popularity contest.

I agree, but I'm just saying that I think his performance will warrant some consideration down the road. I don't see it is a bad thing if it means he and 'Bama are playing well. For instance, let's say he comes up big against Florida, UT, LSU and/or Auburn this year. That could get him on some lists next year and I'm all for that.

You arent winning the heisman this year unless your name is Brady Quinn or Troy Smith. The media has already decided this.

I see where you're coming from, and I agree to an extent. It would mean that the team and JPW is playing very well. I would rather see JPW fly under the radar a little and not be distracted by all the hype. I just hate to see individuals being put on a pedestal in a team sport. Maybe my mentality is based on the fact that I played as a lineman!!!

uhhhh...Here we go again. I for one certainly hope NOT. It will never be worth the distraction of the said player, especially before the Bowl when the award is given out, IMO. I'm much more concerned with the little stuff, like winning championships, more than a BS popularity contest.

Last time I checked there was not only a lot of attention given, but also a big controversy in Austin regarding the Heisman race with Vince Young. Look who won the national title last year.

How can you say you don't want a player at Alabama to NOT be in the Heisman race? It's great publicity for the program. Just look at USC. They've got about 5 blue chip recruits lined up in the next 3-4 recruiting years coming up, and it's all because of name association. Just the simple fact that Bush went to USC and became one of the biggest RB prospects to play college ball in the last 20-30 years does wonders for recruiting.

When the Tide becomes NC material, then JPW will have his shot at it. It will probably happen within the next few years. Hopefully we won't be biting our nails on winning ballgames by the score of 21 - 20 at that stage.

Can you imagine........DJ Hall, Keith Brown and Tyrone Prothro as your 1,2,3 receivers??????? A tight end (Walker) that can catch.....Johns, Upchurch, Sharreif (sp?) and Grant.....in the backfield.....

I'd say he's got a shot at it........if not the Heisman......how about the Unitas? I'll take that!!

Who won the Heisman trophy? Who spent crucial game preparation time posing for pictures and talking to ESPN. Who got almost completely shut down for the first time in about 2 years up to the NC game? Who tried a ******* lateral after a first down resulting in a turnover? Who looked as bad as he ever had in his career?

If you answered Reggie Bush, you would be correct. LeDale White was much more impressive in that game than was Bush. Was he exposed or was he distracted? I would prefer not to ever have to wonder that about an Alabama player.

The Heisman is not important IMO. Winning championships is important.

Personally, I could care less about an award such as the Heisman which is an indivdual award in what is the ultimate team sport.

I think he will be one by his senior season.

He might be a dark horse next year.

That sounds about right. If Brown and Hall were to both comeback next year - along with the return of Pro - he may not be a "dark horse" candidate.

He's an awfully bright spot for our team right now and it's good we remember the positives.

What will his future hold? Let me consult my Crystal Ball...

Nope - don't see no Heistman in there anywhere...

Here's a name for you Reggie Bush. That name will single-handedly bring down the USC football program with all his shenanigans. We just got off probation. I would rather the spotlight be on the team and not an individual. I believe the program is clean now, but we don't want to give people to reason to probe back into our recruiting practices, ala Fat Phil.

Heisman for JPW? Why not? Sure, it's great to hope for championships, but it would also be nice to see a truly deserving player (whether it's JPW or anybody else) get recognized for what he means to a championship team. I wouldn't want to see an active campaign for it and, unlike some other schools, that's never been Alabama's style. But if it came down to it, yeah, I'd like to see him win it.

And speaking of JPW, is it just me or has anybody else noticed TV shots of him on the sidelines occasionally and gotten a sense of deja vu?

Dude, this argument is so flawed its almost funny...

Who is sitting next to Bush in that picture? Could it be the guy that single-handedly won the MNC? Do you remember how much that guy was consumed with winning that trophy and his comments after not doing so? A Heisman winner would do wonders for this program and anyone who thinks otherwise probably had the tree that was blocking his view of the forest fall on his head. The only reason people say that is because we have never had one here. It is a ridiculous argument.
