Joel Klatt blasts Aubarn and says it is a bad job

  • HELLO AGAIN, Guest! We are back, live! We're still doing some troubleshooting and maintenance to fix a few remaining issues but everything looks stable now (except front page which we're working on over next day or two)

Thanks for your patience and support! MUCH appreciated! --Brett (BamaNation)

if you see any problems - please post them in the Troubleshooting board!

I might be making this up, but didn't the AU athletic department phone number used to end in 1957, for their only national title before $cam Newton? That's the kind of stuff little brother would do.

Of course, Auburn is a terrible job. As the Auburn HFBC, you will always play second fiddle to Alabama, yet the expectations are the same as Alabama. Auburn fans are completely delusional, so they run their coaches out of town in a very short amount of time. Auburn is just second rate at everything.

Well, actually they are first rate at doing that... ;)

A good friend of mine, whom he and his wife graduated from Auburn, said that me and another guy we know are his first friends who went to Alabama. He essentially refused to be friends with Alabama fans previously.
My Junior year of HS, my girlfriend ran up to me, super excited, that she'd been accepted to the Barn.

"Oh. You haven't heard from Alabama yet?"

"Alabama? I didn't apply to Alabama."

I truly didn't speak to that woman for 10 years....

I'll start with saying that I am souring on Klatt more and more. He really seems to be picking up the Big 10 v SEC baton and running with it when no one else in the media seems to be having this discussion. I just find it frustrating. Therefore, I don't put a lot of stock into what he says. He also said a week ago that LSU was a better job than Alabama. Obviously, I'm biased, but that's a very bad take from someone who is considered knowledgeable of college football.

I don't know that I would classify the Auburn job as a "bad" job. It's probably the 8th or 9th best job in the SEC. The dilemma, in my opinion, is where does that put it nationally. If I'm just going off of prestige, resources, and access to talent, then I would put it top 15. But, if you consider that it's the 8th or 9th best coaching job in the SEC, then that probably puts it below jobs that are the 4th or 5th best jobs in other power 4 conferences.

Klatt has always hated the SEC. He's never worked (or more accurately he isn't good enough to work) for a network that covers the SEC. Do the math...

Like Klat or not (and I'm not defending him because I just don't ever read/listen to his stuff) but the AU job right now is a TERRIBLE job. Primarily because of the delusions of the Admin, boosters and fans. You're competing against UA and UGA for recruits (among other programs) and you just don't have the prestige/history to do so.
If I'm a coach looking for a job I wouldn't even entertain a call from them right now (that is, of course, assuming I had offers from other programs).
They need to have a man in the mirror moment and adjust their expectations.

Nah, I want them to stay the way they are...

The funny thing is, the worse they get the more defiant and victim mentality the fan base gets. It truly is pathetic.

He's right, for once.

The moment the barn starting thinking each year the goal should be a NC is when this started.

Ironically, sCam did this to them and they've never gotten over it. 2010 was their highest, yet lowest moment.

And, if you could go back in a time machine to 2011 again and ask barners "If you could win the NC this year after your state rivals did last year but then have to roam in the wilderness for the next 15 years would you still want it?" and 99% would sign up again!

That's pretty standard deal with the devil contract language.

It's not a bad job per se. They can pay well. They are near a ton of high school talent. They have a rabid fan base that will sell out a 85k stadium.

The issue isn't even that they fired Freeze. The issue is that they hired him in the first place. And that is the problem with Auburn - the people who run the place. They do have unrealistic expectations, yes, but when you are in the bind that they found themselves in with Freeze, you have to cut your losses.

This is 3 bad decisions in a row. They never should have allowed Malzahn to play poker with them over the Arkansas job. They never should have hired Harsin, and never should have hired Freeze. Now can they necessarily compete with LSU or Florida on candidates? No. But don't try to... there are several great targets in the G5 ranks. Head coaches. It's a gamble, but one they will have to accept.

All that said, I have no complaints with that place being run by morons.

It's gotta be impossible to be Auburn and it's fans. One of the few programs in the country who happen to reside in the same state as another huge, much more successful program. Titles galore, continued success, national stage, Alabama just will always overshadow anything Auburn can do. Not in Georgia, not in Texas, not in California or Tennessee or Ohio or anywhere else, and no, not even the state of Florida, does one program have such a commanding lead in how the program is run, and success to back it up, and Auburn has to live with that. 24/7/365.

Oh well.

Your biggest rivals are Alabama and Georgia. The two most dominate programs over the past 10 years plus. Now Ole Miss is a top tier program and you are looking at UF and LSU both hiring new coaches, and if they make good hires you could be even further behind. UTe isn't the pushover they were for years. You now also the UTw and OU in the mix and both are blue bloods with money to spend. All of your competition has the potential to get better with good hires or just continued trajectories in the case of UA, UGA, and UTe. The fans expect to be on that level and they just aren't.

I do have to boil it down to expectations and administration. Who is hiring these goofs and giving them these contracts? That is where the change needs to happen. In pro sports ownership and upper management has a ton to do with success on the field. In college the equivalent are the school president, trustees, and the AD. Those are where the barn needs to look first to fix problems.

Well, they do love to brag about how every single barn fan in the history of barndom holds a degree from that prestigious institution of higher learning while every single Bama fan is nothing more than a sidewalk alum.
Maybe if they would have a winning season every year or three they would have a few fans that didn't have to spend 40k a year for 4-5 years of their life to actually like them...
