Bloomberg Philanthropies is gifting $1 billion to make medical school free for the majority of students at Johns Hopkins University, joining other high-profile donors who have contributed to tuition-free medical schools across the country.

In a letter by Michael Bloomberg in the Bloomberg Philanthropies’ annual report, the billionaire said the donation addresses twin challenges: declining health and declining education.

Johns Hopkins said Monday that for most medical school students, the gift will cover the full cost of attendance, including tuition and living expenses. Students from families earning less than $300,000 will be eligible for the gift. Living expenses will be covered for students who come from families that earn less than $175,000.
Medical school is now free for most students at this top university after a $1 billion donation

Not sure what you mean?
I am all for free college education. I can understand why rich folks would rather be operated on by the best / smartest / most capable students (who will become doctors) rather than some rich guy's legacy-admission son (think: Frank Burns). I just think that we're all Americans. We should all get that standard of care. They do it in Europe and we're richer than they are.

If you live in a small town in the south, you're not getting an MIT doctor unless he's a pedo or drug addict.

Well, there’s Vanderbilt, Duke, UAB, etc.

meaning, they get free school and you get a bill for their services. So you got nothing free...
I'm not looking for anything for free, I'm just happy someone is willing to generously donate this giant sum so one of the best medical schools in the country can turn out more docs.

Weird that anyone would find a downside to this...

I should have thought of Tulane. My oncologist is a Tulane/Case Western grad. I'm very comfortable with that.
Yup, there are lots of great medical schools. Heck, UT's medical school here is really good.

I don't care where the doc was educated, but if he/she's able to work and not sweat a quarter million (or more) in student loans, all the better.

When I was an undergrad, I went to a press conference at Foggy Bottom (Dept of State) about some Latin American initiative. This was the spring of 1984.
There were a bunch of college students in the room. The Reagan Administration spokesperson presented his spiel and a Johns Hopkins student in International Affairs, got up and said, "Isn't it true that the United States are responsible for every bad thing happening in Latin America today, through exploitation and imperialism?"
The Reagan Administration official stared at the John Hopkins little Marxist and said, "No. Next?"
Then another Johns Hopkins International Affairs student got u and asked, "Isn't it true that Marxism is the only viable option for all of the countries of Latin America and the US is preventing the peace-loving people of Latin America from establishing a workers' paradise?"
The Reagan Administration official stared at the second JHU Junior Marxist and said, "No."

I came away from that encounter with some decided views of Johns Hopkins University.
Of course those Junior Marxists are probably Under-Secretaries of State now.

Sometimes this board is a lifesaver. Sometimes it makes me want to pull my hair out. The latter is one of those times.

Somebody gives $1 Billion to one of the best med schools in the country. The result is that most of their students can go for free.

IOW, the best minds in the country get the best education available anywhere at any price, and get it for free.

It takes us exactly one post to find fault, and fewer than 5 to turn it into a political negative – mainly because $1 Billion isn’t enough to fund a free Johns Hopkins level education to every doctor in the country in perpetuity.

I don’t know whether to be astounded or unsurprised. I guess I’d rather be astounded….because to be unsurprised would be essentially apathetic. Which is the real opposite of caring.

I’m happy with my doctor although I don’t know his credentials or where he went to doctor school.
When he needs a second opinion he sends me to a specialist, and Medicare makes all that possible for me. I’m grateful and hope this system can be preserved for future generations.

I like the concept, but yeah this is just creating a new batch of doctors who are going to get rich faster sucking off the teat of the US healthcare system. If this created more supply of doctors and actually reduced healthcare costs great, but it won't.

I got an idea. Do this for teachers if you actually want to improve things in the country. There is a shortage of quality teachers and completely stupid for the ones that choose to go into the field to run up large amounts of student loan debt. A better educated country creates a better place for all of us.

Okay, it's nice that JHU med students can go to school there for free (or maybe nearly so). Kudos to the donors who made that possible.
The cost of tuition is only part of the price med students pay. There are lots of late nights and long grueling days that also must be paid to become an MD at JHU. The reputation of JHU Med is what will earn the graduates a good bit of money. I do not begrudge them that. They worked for it.

Still, when someone says JHU, what what comes to mind are the Junior Marxists and that annoyed DoS spokesman.

Also, JHU is where Douglas Southall Freeman, the greatest American historian and winner of two Pulitzer Prizes, earned his PhD. (There, I said something nice about JHU.)
The library containing the only copy of his dissertation burned in 1908, so his dissertation is lost forever.

Who cares if they get wealthy faster? If this means there are more good docs out there, it helps people.

I don't get why some of you are piling on this like it's not good unless it helps you.

I got an idea. Make a billion and donate to whomever you wish.
