Josh and Cole on Bama's improvement (video)

Summary: Early on, we were limited offensively by a developing OL and a QB who had turnover problems. Prevented Rees from calling a lot of the stuff he would otherwise have run.

Rees developing Milroe and getting more familiar with his personnel, and how to assign the right responsibilities to the right person, made a big difference….even acknowledging the developing OL and QB.

It took a while, and there were some nasty periods early. But we got there.

My personal take:

- Kadyn Proctor is talented but was over matched early. I thought he was overrated. I was wrong. He just needed reps. He’s reliable now (looking at you, Michigan) and will be a beast for two more years.

- The rest of the OL finally came together when Booker became a clear-cut #1 at LG. With the news of Pritchett ending his dalliance with the portal and coming back to Tuscaloosa, we should have an excellent OL next year.

Might be Saban’s best recruiting job of the 2023-24 class.

- Milroe matured more than I ever would have thought possible. He still has improving to do, but he will be the favorite for the Heisman going into the 2024 season.

- The WRs (largely) quit dropping catchable passes. I’m not knowledgeable enough to know why. Drops were not zero this year…they never are. But they were greatly reduced from 2022.

- Over the last third of the season, the DL started getting pressure — not necessarily sacks, but pressure — without blitz help. We’ll miss Eboigbe.

The betting line and a lot of fan sentiment is based on the team we were in the first half of the season. We’re not that team anymore. I’m bumfuzzled as to why there aren’t models out there that reflect that.

If those really don’t exist, that’s an opportunity big enough for an aircraft carrier to drive through.

Sagarin has a measure that considers this.
Sagarin's Ratings
The RECENT, is score-based and weights RECENT play more heavily than earlier games. Its effect will become more pronounced the longer a season goes if a given team happens to have an upward or downward trend.

It may too much to expect a model to discount that crazy Iron Bowl

For every andre smith who is ready to come in day one there are a ton of O-lineman who need time to develop.
