I hope this doesn't serve as a big distraction to the team/coaching staff this weekend. We all make mistakes, let's hope that he has learned from his.

Tide backup QB faces DUI charge

TUSCALOOSA – Alabama backup quarterback John Parker Wilson was arrested early this morning in nearby Northport on a charge of driving under the influence.

Wilson, a freshman from Hoover, turns 20 years old today.
Wilson was booked into the Tuscaloosa County jail at 2:40 a.m. today, according to jail records. Those records did not reflect when Wilson was released but jail officers said late this afternoon he had been released.

Wilson posted a $500 bond, according to records.

A police source said that Wilson had a blood-alcohol level of .14 – almost twice the state’s legal limit of .08. Wilson was driving on a public street and had passengers in the vehicle.

Crimson Tide coach Mike Shula did not address Wilson’s arrest during his weekly teleconference and was not available for comment following tonight’s practice. Athletic department spokesman Larry White said he did not anticipate Shula making a statement.

Paul Gattis

I also hope that the football coaches continue not to comment, unless it's about a punishment.

Thats disapointing to hear.

JPW will most likely be suspended if the story is true.

Life is full of hard lessons, Lets hope JPW can learn from his mistake.

That's what I was thinking. You don't ever expect stuff like that to come from our boys. But they're people, too. They make mistakes just like we do. It's definitely not what we needed right before the Tennessee game, though. I hate that this is when he chose to do it.

I see both judge and jury are out in full force this morning.

Therein, is the reason I've tried to discourage the way other teams players are crucified on this forum.

That being said...I've lived in Northport and the police there don't put up with anything. It's a strict bunch...BUT, by no means am I trying to excuse him driving.

Unless the newspaper, the Tuscaloosa Sheriff's Department site, and scout.com all got the facts wrong, I don't see his guilt as in doubt.

Nothin' but a step for a team full of steppers . . .

I have full confidence that the matter will be handled appropriately. It will cause a hardship on JPW and on the team; but if any team can handle it, it's this one. They've been handling adversity for the past few years.

Just one more step . . .

Lets lighten up people. He's 20 years old.

I'm sure that the punishment he will receive will be lesson enough.

That being said... its not an excuse for what he did. There's NO excuse for driving under the influence (not to mention he's under age).

This is something that I'm sure Shula will handle the right way. I hope after he gets the facts if he feels there is punishment coming to JPW that coach will take care of it ASAP and not let it linger all week. Besides the GOSSIP aspect of it on the net and papers I would be suprised if Shula has more than 1 comment on this matter in the press.

We all make mistakes - and so many more when we were young and felt like nothing bad could befall us. His having been caught should teach him a lesson. It becoming public should teach him that he is more than a student and that others rely on him. This happening at such a young age might just save his life.

Let stay supportive, make no excuses for him, and hope that he has learned his lesson...

Like everyone else...

I am greatly disappointed in both the action and the timing of the incident. It certainly does have the ability to be a distraction to the team this week and it also puts our QB position in jeopardy if something were to happen to BC. With that said, I hope that not only JPW but also all of our other players realize the importance of their actions away from the field.

Honestly though....

Playing the "what if" game here. If this had been a Vol player, we (or some of us at least) would have said that the whole team was a rowdy bunch of alcoholics and needed to be disciplined harshly.
Now it is one of our boys, and some of us want to let him just face punishment from the judicial system and not the University of Alabama standards.

I don't wish anything on him that is not fitting of the crime. And I know a 20 year old doesn't make clear decisions 100% of the time. I know I certainly didn't make the best decisions as a 20 year old. And yes, I have gotten behind the wheel after getting downright schnokered. Luckily, I was never caught and I didn't kill anyone. It's a scary thought that I did that in my younger years and would never do that now. But many kids do it these days and they should be punished accordingly. I also think that he should be held accountable to the team. He let the team down and as a leader of the team, he should be setting the standard, not lowering it. If I would have been caught, I would have expected the harshest punishment.

I hope that this incidence does not hinder his career at the University of Alabama or professionally.
But as a higher standard that is usually set at UA, he should be dealt with according to the rules as a player. If this means thrown off the team, then so be it. I don't know what rules apply here but I sure hope it is a small slap on the wrist and back to work.
He seems like a honest young man that just learned a lesson in the harshest way. I am glad to see he is not being changed with vehicular homicide. Mostly I hope it is a false article and hope to see him in the starting lineup next year.
