The head of the Big Ten painted a dire picture of what college sports would look like in his testimony, saying his conference would likely cease to exist and the Rose Bowl would probably not be played.
Well, if that is the only downside, I would say it is ok.

Wait, you mean schools and private entities can no longer cash in on a player's likeness without compensation? The horror!

This is a good ruling, regardless of what it does to the sport. If you want to know who is at fault, check your dresser or closet to see if you have any collegiate jerseys / shirts based on your favorite player. The demand is the problem, not the athlete...

It's the NCAA's fault, creating all this chaos the last 6-7 years. They could've taken steps to prevent this. Regardless, glad the players can get some of the money that's made off of them.

Absurd.

People buy the jersey more because of the University than the athlete. How many Bama fans will buy a Leonard Fournette jersey this year? Without th eUniversity, no one knows these guys. And these players are WELL compensated, even without being paid.

Believe what you want but I guarantee if you traced jersey number sales you'd see a direct correlation based on who was playing.

And while I agree they are compensated fairly well, when the university makes literally over a hundred million dollars off the players backs, they deserve some compensation.

And if you think it's all about the school and not the players, feel free to explain the doubling of revenue in the last seven years. We've had more #1 drafted (star) players in the last few years than in the previous decade...

Chicken/Egg argument.

Yes..the University provides the vehicle for the athletes, but by the same token, paint the logo in the center of the field and leave the players out of the equation. You won't have 100,000+ to show up and millions to tune in to stare at the script A at midfield.

I'm baffled that there's such outrage over this. It's really been an eye opening experience. Of course they won't make as much as professional athletes do, but c'mon. If these kids are the engines that generate that type of income, they should at least be able to do simple things like take their girlfriends out to dinner without having to beg their parents for the money or take out student loans to do it.

I attended Bama from 2000-06, and I watched players (who are friends of mine) who were full scholarship players STRUGGLE financially. They got the full college experience. LOL.

I agree players deserve to be compensated, but is this a slippery slope? For instance, could this be turned into a recruiting pitch? "Come to our school. We promise to plaster you image all over everything, put you in advertisements, etc and then we'll sell a boatload of your merchandise!"

Struggle HOW? For Food, tuition, books, tutoring? Lodinging? If they were struggling so they would have Pell Grant Cash in addition to full scholarship benefits.

I say Baloney, and I know a bit about it.

Possibly, but not doing what's right because it might be a slippery slope is wrong.

Come on, I thought you were smarter than this.

The University provides the players with full scholarship and plenty of extra benefits regular students never see. If qualified, they get Pell Grant cash. The University provides a vehicle for players to succeed in life, but your welfare mindset eschews the value of opportunity for the "They owe me" nonsense.

A lot more to it than that. Clothes (other than team issued gear). Gas money. Laundry money. Student organization fees, etc. But I'm fine with us agreeing to disagree. Again...I'm going off of what I witnessed personally.

You ever hear of a Pell Grant? Laundry Money? You think Yeldon or Jameis or any player is looking for quarters to go spend 2 hours in a laundromat?

And what is a student organization fee?

I have no idea what TJ or Jameis is doing. I'm an adult with a family. I don't hang around teenagers. Let me see if I can say it again. I'm going off of what I witnessed personally. Were they issued team gear? Yes. Access to tutoring? Sure. Free food? Sure...up to a certain amount. But again...I'm going by what I witnessed personally.

Student organization fees = membership fees to be a member of a student organization.

I didn't get the perks that the athletes got. But then again, I didn't fill up a stadium/coliseum for people to watch me take a Thermodynamics Final either. It is what it is.

I understand the athletes work hard and struggle. I just do no see how they struggle financially more than any other student who isn't blessed with parents who are loaded. They are provided with much more than other students, including an opportunity to make millions in the pros that others can only dream of achieving.
I agree with many of the changes to scholarship limitations, covering the full cost of attendance, and insurance. I do not agree with paying them for working hard or for using their names or numbers. This is no different than working towards a degree in other fields. I don't see too many high school jerseys sold based on those players. I respectfully agree with IGetBuckets on this. Paying players is going to ruin college football. I hope I am wrong on this and new guidelines will be set up to prevent it.

How much more does a player (especially a star player) generate for the University than an average student?

Also, Prothro.

I'm as open-minded as they come. I don't think I could ever get down with that line of thinking though. But that's just a personal preference of mine. I respect your stance. Mine is just different.
