“He had to settle for Clemson,” Kelly’s first cousin, Derrick Lassic, said tongue-in-cheek. “I think it’s worked out well for him, you know.”

Lassic was Alabama’s starting tailback and the ’93 Sugar Bowl MVP. He is the reason Kelly wanted to play for Alabama — and, by association, the reason Kelly wound up at Clemson.
