Official Bo Pelini Thread. (Place all thoughts regarding Pellini here)

IMO Bo Pelini would be a great fit for Bama...go out and hire a great OC and, we'd be scary to whomever we played...

Memo to MM: Broaden your search, if CNS doesn't work out...go get Bo Pelini, he's the perfect fit for us at the right time and if you've watched this guy, you just know he'd be an excellent HC for us for years to come...

Unfortunately I don't think he has ever been a head coach and if that is indeed the case I don't think he will be considered. If they were going that route I think Jimbo would get a look before him.

I agree that he would be an excellent hire. He will be a successful big time college football coach. LSU fear losing him more than anyone else. Both he and Jimbo Fisher are worthy of an interview if you are looking for an up and coming assistant. Unfortunately we are not so I also agree he will not get a look.

Kirk Herbstreit was praising Pelini yesterday on Finebaum ... apparently Bo is a very dynamic individual, personality-wise the polar opposite of Coach Shula ... a great recruiter and a brilliant defensive coach.

Unfortunately our blunders of the past have led us to a point where we have zero risk tolerance and the powers that be are understandably going after a "proven head coach."

My own feeling is that if we are turned down by the A-list candidates, it would be better to roll the dice on a big-time assistant coach from a major program who is believed by almost everyone to be on the fast track to head coaching success.

That would certainly include Pelini ... and Jimbo Fisher. I think of the two, LSU fans fear losing Pelini the most. Nebraska fans and players wanted him to take over when Solich was fired.

I'd take Pelini any day over a "proven" head coach, if that head coach has proven to be mediocre.

Having said that, I agree with Mr. E that Fisher and Pelini and other assistant coaches probably will not be considered.

Which means we'd better get Saban or we may be looking at a Bowden/Gailey/Grobe type "proven head coach."

I am afraid you are right P.C. and I guess if you are in CMM's shoes it makes sense seeing what has happened when hiring assistants. It would very difficult to weigh the odds of Grobe vs Pellini or Gailey vs Fisher. My gut feel would be to take Pellini over Grobe, Gailey or Fisher. If it were Pellini vs Kragthorpe or Schiano then I might lean toward the ones with proven HC experience, it is a tough call either way.

At first glance, the xCMD and xCMS experiments demonstrate why we need to go after a proven head coach. I though that way myself for a while. But what this line of thinking overlooks is that Dubose and Shula were on NOBODY's radar (except Alabama) as a ready to be a head coach at a big-time program.

I think with Dubose it was a matter of our arrogance. We felt that anybody could win at Bama. And indeed, it does appear that anybody can win 10 games here once.

With Shula, we were in a tough spot and he seemed like a good fit to get us through it. In many ways he was; he just didn't (yet) have what it takes to get us to the next level.

Having considered all of the above, I agree that we are unnecessarily limiting ourselves by only looking at coaches with division I head coaching experience. On the other hand, I also think that we could do a lot worse than Paul Johnson.

On the otherhand, there have been many successful assistants that have done well when they became head coaches. Bob Stoops and Mark Richt are two just to start off.

I think we are in agreement here. Recall, I said

I only threw in the part about Johnson because I think we would also be doing ourselves a disservice to ignore a coach just because he hasn't coached in the SEC.

Bo Pellini isn't even close to Alabama's radar. Putting him in the same category of "PROVEN" assistant as Jimbo Fisher is an insult of major proportions to Fisher. Bo Pellini's claim to fame was serving as a head coach at Nebraska for 1bowl game. He is not on Bama's radar and nor should he be.

IMO, Bo Pellini is one of those coaches like Bob Stoops that 5 years from now, a lot of schools will be saying, "Why didn't we hire this guy?"

I saw a brief interview with him a year or so ago, and was really impressed. He seemed completely in control and had sort of a "presence" about him. His players love him and he's had success everywhere he's been.

I think Jimbo Fisher will make a very good head coach for somebody, but if I were going to pick somebody off the LSU staff, it'd be Bo Pellini.

"My name has just one "L" ... Pelini ... got it? Don't make me have to hurt someone."

My apologies to the Boster...whatever the he...lll you're name is, I like ya son and, I'd think you'd do us proud.

I'm in agreement with many of you...

This guy may not be on our radar and, I believe it would serves us well if he was.

Herbstreit was on Finebaum yesterday and was giving this guy major props.

And, he also said that Pelini would be his 1st choice of Asst.'s off of LSU...FWIW

I think he could be the next Bob Stoops.

I wouldn't mind Bo Pelini taking over as head coach and bringing Jimbo as OC, or Jimbo being Head coach and bring Bo as DC. Sounds like a plan. Then we'd all watch Les Miles crumble.
