I know we don't post about rumors on here, but since it's Tennessee, maybe I'll get some leeway.

There are lots of rumors floating around here about discord within the team, and Butch's days are numbered.

Discord, eh? . . . Maybe they are simply tired to being so poorly prepared for football. Maybe they can find solace in being Champions of Life.

Botch Jones -- because he has botched up a mediocre team to less than. The party line in Orangeland is that Botch is not on the hot seat. I believe Jawja will rip them apart Saturday and even his biggest supporters may move him closer to the fire.

Based on what I've heard from UT people (I know a couple), between Botch's buyout, the rest of the staff's buyout, and the hiring of a new coach and staff (along with the associated buyouts they would likely be responsible for in order to get a new coach out of his existing contract), tennessee is looking at roughly $25 million to change coaches at the end of the 2017 season.

They can't afford that.

From what I've been told, outside of a total meltdown (finishing somewhere below .500) Botch will be back in 2018. *fingers crossed*

As much as I want to agree, it seems like every time I say something like, "Georgia will destroy Tennessee," I jinx something and the Vols seem to beat them. So I refrain from saying it anymore.

That's why I'm glad you did! And I hope you're right.

This is what a lot of their fanbase simply does not understand. UT has had money issues in the AD for several years now. They've turned over a lot of coaches in various sports and attendance in football has fallen way off.

To many Vol fans around my stratosphere, the answer seems clear . . . bring Phil back. I'm not sure which would be more enjoyable to me. Sgt Carter and his champions of life or Coach Krispy Kreme getting the stuffing squashed out of him a few more times.

I joined a Vol board just for pickem. I have not commented but I did ask a Mod if Tennessee had they financials in order now or were they still trying to get in the black ink. He said they were doing fine now and the $$$ would be no problem for a new HC. Hmmmm. I didn't believe it and glad to see I was right according to crimsonaudio.

OK...If nothing else butch has given us this. I like the provision in rule #3 about making up a new rule on the spot. Thank you butch!

The rules are simple:

  1. If you beat the current Life Champ, you become the Life Champ. That gives the belt a chance to traverse the entire country in one season.
  2. However, being the Life Champ is only an honor for teams that are not actually likely to be the champions of anything. Therefore, any team that is ranked in the AP Poll is ineligible. A ranking will revert the belt to Tennessee, so long as Tennessee is unranked. (This is how Tennessee got it when a ranked Florida won at Kentucky in Week 4.)
  3. If both the latest winner and Tennessee are both ranked, then we’ll make up another rule on the spot. This includes if Tennessee gets ranked while holding the belt.

We'll see. Sometimes these things turn on a dime, but typically this sort of move would require heavy booster financing, and despite what people seem to think, most boosters don't throw millions around like it's nothing. The wealthy boosters have serious money because they're serious about their money...

You're probably right about the total dollar figure but *most* coach contracts have offset language (which means their buyout is offset by any other salary they make in coaching) and buyout payment is not typically due immediately or paid in a lump sum. With that being said I bet if they did clean house and the total cost figure was $25M, after offsets and such it'd probably be about half of that. Most coaches take another job as soon as they can because the buyout money will only last for so long and the longer they stay out of coaching the harder it is to get back in. Especially on a staff that's underachieved as much as this one. So while it'd still be expensive the UT athletic department has to weigh how much it'd cost to make the change vs how much they're losing in football revenue by keeping a poor product on the field. If you approach the decision like that it's probably pretty easy to make the decision to clean house and start over if the product doesn't improve this year..

Any possibility you guys think he could fire Bob Shoop and buy some time? I’m thinking that’s not in the cards because he already fired his first DC to bring in Shoop. However the ending of the Florida game was absolutely coaching malpractice on that side of the ball. I think he has to do something to stop the bleeding if he loses to Georgia as many expect him to do.

Nah, (Penn State blue font) he was already "fired" by Franklin and has the lawsuit pending about his "dismissal" by PSU forcing him to join Botch's staff at a 40% pay raise. Could be there's a clause in his UcheaT contract that if the yards per game average surrendered by Shoopy's defense dips below 600, he gets a bonus...and maybe another zircon carat for his Champions of Life ring. He's all in with Botch - and vice versa - at least until that court date and a judge's decision on whether he owes Penn State $1M in buyout money that he either absconded with or (PSU flaming blue font) got as severance pay. He's from litigiousness folk, UcheaT won't fire him midseason and risk Botch having to reenact the Scopes monkey trial testifying on the evolution of the Championship of Life...
