Yea, i agree it's still silly.
But i have a lot of relatives that are Ole Miss fans, and they jump up and do the shark hand thing when they watch the team(not so much this year though LOL).

Some people are lemmings I guess. It's a new thing, no tradition behind it. Sad that litterally all it takes is one guy doing a gesture for everyone to be like: "this is our thing now", even if it is really stupid.

I guess I'm just not hip and into what's hot right now. I remember the land shark from the old SNL scetch, but is it still known today? I am familiar with the beer, but are they referring to the one from SNL? Are people today aware of it who were not alive then?

They're really unaware. That's kind of the issue.

The only thing that would make this better is if somehow the Laughing Stocks, er I mean the Land Sharks figure out a way to beat the boogs this weekend.

With their new mascot at the van, er, handguard, Ole Fish shall fight them on the beaches, on the landing grounds, in fields and in the streets, in the hills and in the cowpatties - everywhere but the water - to uphold the Laughing Stocks, er, Land Sharks' honour...

I also have to say, that is in the running for the dumbest looking hand gesture of all time. Especially when an entire group of people do it together.

It reminds me of something one would do during a drinking game.

I am not saying this new mascot makes sense for Ole Miss but I wont joke about its origin. For those who dont know the term "landsharks" came from a senior linebacker and military Iraq veteran who started the term in 2008. He passed away in 2009 and the "landsharks" legacy grew rapidly.

Roots of the "Landshark" at Ole Miss date back to 2008. After four straight losing seasons, the Rebel football team returned to national prominence with a 9-4 record and a victory over 7th-ranked Texas Tech in the Cotton Bowl. Leading the charge was a defensive squad that ranked fourth in the nation in rushing defense and included All-Americans Peria Jerry and Greg Hardy and eventual All-SEC standout Jerrell Powe.

The term "Landshark" originated that season from senior linebacker Tony Fein, an Army veteran who served a one-year tour in the Iraq War before arriving in Oxford. A two-year letterman after transferring from Scottsdale (Ariz.) Community College, Fein was the 2008 recipient of the Pat Tillman Award by the Military Order of the Purple Heart. Fein passed away in October 2009, but his legacy at Ole Miss continues through the "landsharks"

May not be a perfect fit but it had meaning and is very inspirational for their school.

Hats off to Mr Fein.

For the record when you post a direct quote, as in most of your post is a direct quote, you are supposed to give some sort of an attribution or at least quotation marks.

Edit: To clarify I'm not saying citations or anything, but it would be easy to confuse your words with the words of someone else if you do not differentiate.

If they were serious about changing their name and identity they should have taken it seriously, put some real thought into it, made the decision and move forward. This has now long past become a joke and not the kind that Ole Miss can join in and laugh along. It's an embarrassment to their program and right now they don't need anymore embarrassment. This is like the cherry on top.
