Major Applewhite accepts UT job

Re: CMA Thread

I personally have no idea what happened to the thread. It just disappeared without a trace that I can find. No one told me not to post anything so here goes.

In the interest of public disclosure here is the latest.

Applewhite expected to take position at Texas
Barring a dramatic, last-minute change, all indications Tuesday night were that University of Alabama offensive coordinator and quarterback coach Major Applewhite is leaving the Capstone to accept a job at his alma mater, Texas, within the next couple of days.

Applewhite flew to Austin on Tuesday morning, landed at approximately 11 a.m. and was reportedly on campus by lunchtime. He met with head coach Mack Brown in the evening hours and stayed the night. Applewhite’s wife, Julie, made the trip as well.

Texas has an opening for a running backs coach after Ken Rucker stepped down to become the school’s director of high school relations and player development. Sources indicate that a second title, which could make the jump more lucrative, is a possibility, but Applewhite would not be calling the offensive plays regardless.

Bevo Beat: Signs still strong for Applewhite return
Former Texas quarterback Major Applewhite and his wife, Julie, are spending the night at an Austin hotel after a full-day of interviewing for an assistant’s spot on Mack Brown’s staff.

Applewhite was scheduled to meet with Brown Tuesday night. Brown had been on the road recruiting, but flew back to Austin for the interview.

Offensive coordinator Greg Davis picked up Applewhite at the airport. UT chartered a jet to bring him from Tuscaloosa to Austin Tuesday morning.

Signs are very strong that Applewhite will be hired, with a source close to the negotiations telling the American-Statesman that it basically a “done deal.”

That makes a lot of sense.:conf2:

Re: CMA Thread

Folks if this is true and if it is also true that he will NOT be calling plays "regardless" then he took a step down which means he wanted out bad or was "encouraged" to leave. One or the other. This isn't a "want to coach at your alma mater" type scenario.

Re: CMA Thread

The news down here just said all indications are he is gone but nothing will be sure until tomorrow.

Sure do hate that I liked Major thought he could grow with us a few years.

I wonder what happened? Our offense struggled but still average more points than the Shula offense in it's first season. I wonder what was going on for CMA or CNS not to at least let the system get set in place for longer than one season?

I remember the commentators during the Colorado game saying something to the effect of "Major Applewhite put it like this: working with Nick Saban, every second of every day is like 4th and 1."

I remember thinking to myself that doesn't sound like a man who's entirely happy with his current situation. I think the pressure Saban put on him, coupled with the ever-present criticism applied by the "experts" of "Bama nation" on whoever is calling plays, made him want to look elsewhere.
