Bama Game Thread: MBB Bama vs Vandy at Memorial - Wed Jan 7 8p CST ESPN2

Disappointing performance by certain players. Give Vandy credit, they played better and made shots. Refs were not an issue as they called it evenly bad, bama players did stupid stuff like throwing ball back up after FT. Sherrell being out hurt then Phillon but again certain players just playing poorly lost this game.

Bright side is Allen may be best player on the team by end of season. If we get him, Phillon, Holloway and Sherrell healthy this team is extremely hard to beat. Plenty of time to heal and get hot by tourney time.

Last night really shined an even brighter light on just how thin we are down low. Sherrell was out and we just had nothing. Williamson with 4 fouls in 4 minutes has to be a new record of some sort.

I say it every year, when Oats’ system is working its poetry in motion. When it’s not it’s painfully frustrating to watch.
To me this is a flaw in Oats' approach. If you're going to shoot this many threes and you have an off night (which most of the time we do against higher level teams because of better size and D on the other team), you have to have another way to generate points and get more possessions. One of the major problems is Oats' teams do not pressure the other team on defense at all. Last night, we forced 8 turnovers. According to Bart Torvik, we are 335th in the country in forcing turnovers on defense. That would be one way to generate points if threes aren't falling but his teams consistently do not do that. It's almost like he needs to press to go along with this style. He has the depth. Along with that, we usually get outrebounded as well giving the other team even more possessions. But last night we were +11 on the boards overall and +10 on the O boards so that wasn't the issue.

We are also so soft and thin on the inside. We really only have one legitimate big man in Sherrell and so far this year, we can't count on him. Really needed him against Arizona and he played great in the first half. Then, he was unavailable in the second due to full body cramps (same as Philon last night). Then Sherrell was unavailable against Kentucky and Vandy. We really need about three of him but really only have 0.5. That's really going to limit the ceiling of this team I'm afraid.

I couldn't stay up for this one. I turned it off a little after 10. I've been at Disney from 01.01 until Tuesday night late and was just dead. I did see CNO get the T. Who got the 2nd T?
Holloway. He missed a free throw. Caught his miss and shot it again. Before his second FT. Called a tech as a delay of game. That kind of night.

I disagree completely. They let Vandy get away with murder the first 10 minutes. Slap. Hit. Thug. Molest basically. Very few fouls on Vandy. We had 10 fouls to their 6 10 minutes in. Then Nate took the gloves off and it became a foul fest.

So no, this was a typical Don Daily performance. No foul on a tackle. But if you hand check 40 set away I’m going to call it. This time. But not the next 10.

Horribly uneven officiated game. And if you seek out others on x, you will see that everyone but Vandy fans were complaining.

He’s kind of an enigma just so slow and unathletic at times.

Totally agree!!! That's why we'll never win a NC in basketball. I like Oats and all that, but his style of play is not conducive to winning the top prize. I see the same things every year with our team, just with different players-inconsistent shooting from game to game, no defense, turnovers, sloppy with the basketball, tons of fouls. Like it was said, when everything is working it's great. When it's not, it's very painful to watch. I end up going into another room and watching old Johnny Carson shows.

Do you remember the time between mid Gottfried and the arrival of CNO?

We do remember and we're very thankful that the program is infinitely better than that time period. But we are past that and are a top 15 program now consistently. You would just like to see some tweaks and small changes to the system to try and break through the championship ceiling. We're 7 seasons in on CNO's tenure. Like the poster said, it just seems like repeat every year when the threes aren't falling. That's where I am also. I enjoy Alabama basketball where it's at but you sure would like to see some small changes to get to the next level.
